TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 72-year-old man over the alleged strangling of his wife at their residence in Setagaya Ward, reports NHK (July 14).
A little after 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Toyohiko Kurabe called police from his house in Kamikitazawa. “I strangled my wife to death,” he said.
When police officers rushed to the scene, they found Mayumi Kurabe, 66, collapsed on her futon in a first-floor bedroom. She was taken to the hospital, but died shortly thereafter.
According to police, Mayumi had multiple stab wounds to her chest and marks of strangulation on her neck.
Upon his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder, Kurabe said, “We were going to close the real estate appraiser’s office that I was running, and my wife was urging me to complete the necessary procedures. I was afraid that it would be discovered that I hadn’t done the work.”
Police have since change the charges to murder. The investigation is ongoing.
