About 30 minutes before, Saito is suspected of attempting to kill his father, who lives with him at their home in the city, by slashing his neck with a kitchen knife.

His father, aged in his 80s, suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening, police said.

Saito was drunk at the time. After the slashing, he pointed the knife at a police officer who rushed to the scene. The officer then fired his handgun.
