KYOTO (TR) – An express train struck and killed a person at a railway crossing in Kyotanabe City earlier this month, railway operator Kintetsu Railway has announced, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Aug. 23).
The collision occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on August 23 at a crossing situated between Shin-Tanabe and Kodo stations on the Kintetsu Kyoto Line. The express train was en route from Nara to Kokusaikaikan at the time of the incident.
None of the roughly 130 passengers on board the train sustained injuries, the operator said.
The resulting aftermath caused significant chaos across the local transit network. A total of 66 trains were cancelled in both directions, while nine others suffered delays of up to 1 hour and 27 minutes, impacting an estimated 15,000 commuters.
