TOKYO (TR) – A male delivery driver tied to Yamato Transport was killed after he was crushed by a cart loaded with packages in Chiyoda Ward, police said on Thursday.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police received an emergency call at 5 a.m. saying that “someone was crushed after a rack fell on them,” after which responding officers found Tsutomu Ishikawa, 51, collapsed under the parcels. He was later confirmed dead, reports TV Asahi (Mar. 30).

Ishikawa, a worker at a company affiliated with Yamato Transport, was likely attempting to carry packages from his truck to a sales office when the cart toppled and crushed him, police said.

The cause is being investigated, police said, adding the cart was not damaged.

Yamato Transport has been drawing attention over what former and current workers say are poor work conditions, including low pay and overwhelming workloads.
