TOKYO (TR) – A 62-year-old man in custody on charges of assault has died while in police custody in Fuchu City, reports the Sankei Shimbun (April 27).
At just after midnight on Tuesday, the suspect collapsed at a curve in a corridor at the Fuchu Police Station as he was being removed from his cell by two staff members. As the suspect fell, he severely hit his head on a wall.
He was transported in an unconscious state to a nearby hospital where he died later that morning. The cause of death was determined to be a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which is caused by bleeding in the brain.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. on the day before, the man allegedly assaulted the manager of a convenience store in Fuchu. He was drunk at the time of the incident.
“At present we do not view our handling of the matter to be problematic,” said Kengo Sato, the vice-chief of the Fuchu Police Station.
