ISHIKAWA (TR) – Ishikawa Prefectural Police on Tuesday arrested a 40-year-old man after a corpse, likely that of his mother, was found inside his apartment in Komatsu City, reports Nippon News Network (Sep. 29).

On Monday, officers discovered what are believed to be the skeletal remains of the 68-year-old mother of Takahiro Okamura lying next to a heated blanket inside a first-floor living room. The body did not exhibit any signs of external wounds.

Okamura, 40, who shares the residence with his mother, was charged with abandoning a corpse. The suspect admits to the allegations. “In August of last year, she died and I left her as is,” the suspect is quoted by police.

Prior to the discovery of the body, a neighbor consulted with police about a recent lack of contact with the elder Okamura. Since August of last year, an employee from the Komatsu City office visited the residence on multiple occasions to inquire about the whereabouts of the suspect’s mother. However, the suspect refused to allow the employee to enter the residence.

Police are now working to confirm the identity of the corpse.
