INDIA (TR) – Police on Sunday announced the arrest of a 25-year-old man for allegedly raping a Japanese woman at a beach resort in the state of Kerala, reports TV Asahi (Nov. 28).
On Friday, Tejha Pawar, the manager of a handicrafts shop, brought the woman, a 35-year-old tourist visiting the country as a part of a group, to a lodge. He is then alleged to have sexually assaulted her.
According to a complaint filed with police, the victim met the suspect at the shop. “After spending some time on the beach, during when they consumed beer, he took her to a lodge and forced himself on her,” the complaint read, according to the The Hindu (Nov. 27). “After managing to flee from the lodge, the victim ran to the resort, where her friends were staying.”
In the incident, the woman suffered injuries that caused extensive bleeding. After arriving at the resort, she entered a hospital.
A representative of the hospital then contacted police, who arrested Pawar on Saturday night on charges of rape resulting in injury.
Sexual assaults have become a social problem in India. Last year, three men were sentenced to 20 years in prison in the gang rape of a 19-year-old Japanese woman in Jaipur, another tourist destination in the state of Rajasthan.
