TOKYO (TR) – A man threw what appeared to be Molotov cocktails at the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) headquarters in Chiyoda Ward on Saturday, Tokyo Metropolitan Police said.
Immediately after, the man tried to drive his car into the Prime Minister’s official residence, but was arrested by police.
According to police, Atsunobu Usuda, a 49-year-old resident of Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, has been accused of suspicion of obstruction of the duties of public officials.
Usuda has remained silent during questioning, police said.
Just before 6 a.m., Usuda approached the LDP headquarters in Nagatacho, got out and threw several Molotov cocktails, some of which fell onto the premises.
Usuda then fled in his white minivan and drove into a fence in front of the nearby Prime Minister’s official residence. After throwing what appeared to be a smoke bomb at a police officer, he was apprehended.
The minivan Usuda was driving was loaded with plastic containers and he was also seen strying to set them on fire.
