Ex-Shinjuku call girl who raked in ¥100 million a month reveals secrets to biz success in new book

TOKYO (TR) – In the hyper-competitive world of Tokyo’s red-light districts, one sex worker managed to achieve the unthinkable: raking in 100 million yen in a single month.

Rurutan, a 26-year-old influencer with over 1.1 million social media followers, has documented her meteoric rise from a standard “delivery health” (call girl) worker to a multimillion-yen brand.

Now, she is baring her business secrets in a new book “Rurutan and Osamu’s KPI of Desire.” Co-authored with former broadcast writer Osamu Suzuki, the book, released on September 1 by publisher Fusosha, gives what she deems the key performance indicators (KPI) within Japan’s adult entertainment industry, reports Gendai Media (Aug. 22).

“It comes down to timing,” Rurutan says. “If I were still working exclusively in the adult entertainment industry, my customers might have drifted away. But the people who support me now are those who have backed my endeavors all along; they know how much I’ve loved reading since childhood and that publishing a book was a long-held goal of mine. So, rather than feeling like I was just using them, I think their reaction is more like, ‘I recognize and appreciate that kind of success, too.'”

No. 1 spot

When she debuted in the Shimbashi district at age 19, the then-university law student took home a modest 8,000 yen for a 60-minute session. Within five years, she skyrocketed her rate to an unprecedented 200,000 yen an hour.

According to Rurutan, her ambition caught fire when she transferred to a Shinjuku-based agency in September 2020 amid the pandemic. Surrounded by Kabukicho’s cutthroat culture of female sex workers spending all their earnings on male hosts Rurutan chose a different path.

“Instead of paying for hosts, having clients pay for me made me feel loved,” she said. Driven by a fierce desire to be needed, she took on difficult clients and hit the No. 1 spot in just two months, maintaining the crown for 18 consecutive months.

AV productions

Treating her agency rankings and X follower count as a corporate report card, Rurutan began strategically raising her prices. She bumped her 60-minute rate to 60,000 yen — the highest in the agency — and still saw consistent bookings.

But there was a physical limit to her lucrative trade. To meet soaring demand, she pivoted to producing independent adult video (AV) productions.

The gamble paid off massively. Her solo AV debut in August 2023 netted 6 million yen. A later collaboration with a prominent male actor raked in nearly 90 million yen in just one month, pushing her total monthly income to the 100 million yen mark.

Strip club

Eventually, Rurutan capped her physical call girl services at a staggering 200,000 yen per hour, treating the exorbitant price hike as a promotional tool for her overarching idol persona. Even at that rate, she still secures around 20 elite clients a month.

With her book launching on September 1, the former law student is already eyeing her next high-stakes challenge: stepping onto the stage at Asakusa Rock-za, Japan’s most historic strip theater.

While strip clubs in Japan constantly face the threat of police raids and arrests for public indecency, Rurutan says her legal background provides her with a strict sense of compliance —which is why she originally chose call girl services over the legally grey soapland bathhouses.

“I am terrible at dancing and expressing myself in front of people, so this is honestly the hardest job I’ve ever taken,” she admitted regarding her upcoming strip debut. “But I love doing things I don’t want to do. I want to move the hearts of the audience.”
