KANAGAWA (TR) – The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau has filed a criminal indictment against a 63-year-old chiropractor who regularly appears on television over alleged tax evasion, reports Fuji News Network (Apr. 24).

The office has accused Teruaki Tanaka, the head of Tanaka Medical Group, which is located in Yokohama’s Tsurumi Ward, of concealing 140 million yen to avoid paying 39 million yen in taxes over a three-year period ending in 2014.

Tax authorities believe that Tanaka used the concealed income to purchase a residence as an investment.

The Tanaka Medical Group specializes in providing treatment for persons who have been in accidents. Tanaka regularly appears on television programs as a specialist who can treat stiff shoulders and lower back problems.

Tanaka, who describes himself as “Japan’s best chiropractor” on his blog, has responded to the allegations by saying that proper documents have since been filed. “From now, I will endeavor to pay the correct taxes,” the chiropractor was quoted by Nippon News Network (Apr. 24).
