KAGOSHIMA (TR) – A white tiger fatally mauled a male zoo keeper at a zoo in Kagoshima City on Monday, police said, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Oct. 8).
At just past 5:00 p.m., an employee at the Hirakawa Zoo alerted emergency services after the tiger bit 40-year-old Akira Furusho. Personnel arriving at a display area at the zoo found Furusho collapsed and bleeding from his head, the Kagoshima-Minami Police Station said.
Furusho was transported to a hospital but was later confirmed dead, police said.

After the incident, the tiger, which is among four at the zoo, was shot with a tranquilizer gun.
According to the zoo, the incident took place after the park closed for the day, and no customers were injured.
