Ex-Nissan labor union employee used embezzled funds for girlfriend’s business

TOKYO(TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a former employee of the Nissan Group Labor Union who is suspected of embezzling about 100 million yen from the company, reports Fuji News Network (Mar. 11).

In 2019, Yumi Karatsu, a 61-year-old former accountant at the union, allegedly embezzled 2.68 million yen of funds from a political group within the union to her own account.

Upon her arrest on suspicion of embezzlement on March 7, Karatsu confessed to the crime, according to the Atago Police Station.

She said that she used the funds to buy a vehicle for herself. She added, “I used it to fund the operation of a store run by my partner.”

Karatsu is believed to have embezzled around 140 million yen over a seven-year period. Police are currently investigating whether she may have committed other crimes.
