Filipino technical intern accused of smuggling marijuana via postal mail

IWATE (TR) – Authorities here have announced the arrest of a Filipino technical intern trainee for allegedly smuggling marijuana and liquid narcotics through postal mail, reports the Sankei Shimbun (May 9).

According to the Oshu Police Station, Jericho Estrada Dela Peña, a 33-year-old resident of Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, was accused of violating the Narcotics Control Act made on April 23.

The suspect was accused of importing cannabis and other drugs from the Philippines in April. According to the Ofunato Branch of the Hakodate Customs Office, Tokyo Customs officials found approximately 2.4 grams of marijuana and around 0.23 grams of liquid narcotics during an inspection of international mail on April 9.

Dela Peña denies the charges, police said.

The Ofunato branch, which conducted a joint investigation, also filed a complaint with the Morioka District Public Prosecutors Office on May 9 on suspicion of violating the Customs Act.
