TOKYO (TR) – Two men blackmailed a man for more than three million after they caught him taking illicit photos of a high school girl at a train station in Machida City, police said on Friday.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested Masashi Nakamura, 22, and a male associate for allegedly squeezing 3.41 million yen in hush money out of the man by claiming another associate was with the victim at Machida Station, NHK reports (November 18).

Nakamura, who has been charged with extortion, denies the charges, quoted by police as saying he “received the cash but I never threatened him,” while his associate has admits to the charges.

In a scheme known as “upskirt photographer hunters,” the suspects led the man around to convenience stores, banks and consumer finance machines to gather the money after they caught him taking photographing up the skirt of a high school girl on an escalator at the station.

The suspects allegedly told the man, “You took the photos, didn’t you? We’ve got someone with the victim right now. The settlement will cost three million yen.”

Police believe the suspects could have repeatedly been running the scheme as an organized group, Nippon News Network reported.
