Sapporo woman arrested after corpse found in residence

HOKKAIDO(TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police have arrested a 59-year-old woman for allegedly leaving the body of a person believed to be her mother at their residence in Sapporo City, reports STV News (Mar. 14).

On the morning of March 13, the city’s Community Comprehensive Support Center alerted police, saying that they had been unable to contact the mother of Harumi Oguchi since the end of last December.

The mother, aged in her 80s, was living in a detached house of a property in Atsubetsu Ward. Officers arriving at the residence found the body lying face-up in the living room.

Upon her arrest on suspicion of abandoning a corpse, Oguchi said, “My mother died, but I didn’t talk to anyone about it.”

The body was in an advanced state of decomposition. There were no visible external injuries, police said.

Police are working to confirm the cause of death and confirm the identity of the body.
