Saitama police instructor found sleeping in woman’s house

SAITAMA (TR) – A 40-year-old police officer who serves as an instructor at the Saitama Prefectural Police Headquarters Police Academy was arrested earlier this week for breaking into an apartment in Saitama City.

Naoto Yamamoto, an instructor at the Saitama Prefectural Police Academy, was intoxicated at the time of his arrest, reports NHK (Jan. 6).

At around 12:30 a.m. on January 6, Yamamoto is suspected of trespassing after breaking into a unit on the first floor of an apartment building in Omiya Ward.

A woman living in the unit later called police to report that “a man was sleeping in the house.” Officers who rushed to the scene arrested him on the spot.

When questioned, Yamamoto admitted to the charges. “I drank a considerable amount of alcohol,” he said. “There is no doubt that I went in, but I don’t know which house I went into.”

Yamamoto did not know the woman. He was sound asleep as the woman dialed police.

Following the instructor’s arrest, Saitama Prefectural Police Academy Vice Principal Morifumi Sakamoto commented, “It is truly regrettable that a staff member was arrested. We will provide thorough guidance and education and strive to prevent a recurrence.”
