Polygamous ex-fortuneteller on trial for sexual assault dies in apparent suicide

TOKYO (TR) – A polygamous former fortuneteller who was on trial over over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl has died in an apparent suicide, police said on Monday, reports Jiji Press (Jan. 20).

According to the Higashiyamato Police Station, a woman living with Hirohito Shibuya, 76, found him collapsed and unconscious at their residence at their home in Higashiyamato City at around 10:10 pm on Sunday.

After the woman called emergency services, he was rushed to a hospital. But he was later confirmed dead.

Shibuya lived with 13 people, including his wife, eight former wives and three children. In February 2023, police arrested him on suspicion of quasi-forced sexual intercourse with a teenage girl.

Shibuya was scheduled to be sentenced in the case at the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Court at 11:00 a.m. on Monday.

Shibuya had been arrested four other times on suspicion of quasi-forced sexual intercourse.
