Osaka man, 73, accused of strangling wife with electrical cord of hair dryer

OSAKA (TR) – Osaka Prefectural Police have arrested a 73-year-old man for allegedly strangling his wife inside their residence in Yao on Monday.

At around 12:35 p.m., Hidejiro Shiraki called police from the residence. “I strangled my wife to death,” reports Kyodo News (Oct. 14).

When police officers arrived, they found his wife, 75-year-old Mizuko, lying unconscious on her back between the living room and the hallway of the house. The electrical cord of a hair dryer was wrapped around her neck.

Mizuko was taken to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest. However, she was later confirmed dead. The cause of death appears to have beeen asphyxiation, police said.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder, Shiraki admitted to the allegations. “I strangled [her] in the hallway on the first floor,” the suspect said.

Shiraki lives with his wife and son in the residence. Police are now seeking a motive for the crime.
