TOKYO (TR) – The National Police Agency (NPA) said this week that the annual amount of bets made by experienced online casino players in Japan exceeds 1.2 trillion yen, reports Fuji News Network (Mar. 14).
The NPA conducted its first survey of 7,000 people, including both inexperienced and experienced online casino players, and found that nearly 40 percent of them were unaware of the illegality of the games.
Based on the results of the survey, it is estimated that there are approximately 3.37 million experienced and active online casino players in Japan.
The annual amount bets made by experienced players in Japan is estimated to be approximately 1.2423 trillion yen, the NPA said.
In addition, a survey was conducted on 40 online casino sites, all of which were licensed and operated by overseas governments. Of them, only two sites displayed a notice prohibiting use from Japan.
Sine the start of the year, a number of Japanese celebrities and athletes have been found to have placed wagers at overseas online casino sites.
The NPA also stated that it will warn celebrities who advertise the sites, as they may be aiding gambling.
