Musician Kosuke Atari accused of raping man in Shinagawa bathhouse

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested musician Kosuke Atari over the alleged rape of a man at a bathhouse in Shinagawa Ward, reports Fuji News Network (Mar. 29).

According to a senior officer at the Ebara Police Station, Atari, 44, is suspected of performing lewd acts on the man, aged in his 20s, as he slept in a chair of the public bathhouse at around 2:00 a.m. on Friday.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse, Atari said, “I have no recollection of this at all.”

Atari lives in Nishigotanda, Shinagawa. As the incident unfolded, a third man noticed the lewd acts being perpetrated by Naka and subdued him. A bathhouse employee then called police.

Atari is from Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. He made his major debut in 2006. He gained popularity with a singing voice rooted in shima uta (island songs). His signature song “Hana,” released in 2007, was used in a commercial.

In an interview with the Yomiuri Shimbun, Atari’s agency commented, “We deeply regret his arrest. We will proceed with verifying the facts.”
