Man, youth nabbed over fire extinguisher incident at Shibuya ‘Scramble Crossing’

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 29-year-old man and a youth in connection with an incident in which one of them sprayed a fire extinguisher as they rode motorcycles recklessly last week.

Early on December 24, Taichi Watanabe and the youth, 15, are suspected of driving dangerously, including ignoring traffic signals, at the “Scramble Crossing” in Shibuya Ward, reports TBS News (Dec. 30).

As they went through the crossing, Watanabe sprayed the contents of the fire extinguisher at the crossing.

Both suspects, who were further accused of not possessing a driver’s license, have admitted to the charges. “I thought I wouldn’t get caught if I was just driving a little recklessly,” Watanabe said.

Two hours prior to this incident, a similarly reckless motorcycle was spotted in Kawasaki City, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is investigating whether there is a connection.
