Man who pedaled bicycle 20 km to allegedly attempt to sexually assault woman not prosecuted

TOKYO (TR) – Prosecutors have announced the non-prosecution of a 38-year-old man who pedaled a bicycle more than 20 kilometers to attempt to sexually assault a woman at her apartment in Fuchu City earlier this year, reports TV Asahi (Dec. 27).

Early on May 6, Tsuyoshi Kawasaki, an office worker from Shinagawa Ward, allegedly broke into the apartment of the woman, aged in her 20s, and injured her as she slept while attempting to commit an obscene act.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of non-consensual indecent assault resulting in injury in August, Kawasaki chose to remain silent.

On Friday, prosecutors announced the non-prosecution of Kawasaki. However, the reason for the non-prosecution was not given.

According to police, Kawasaki climbed up to the third floor of the building and entered the woman’s unit through an unlocked window.

After the woman woke up, they got into a scuffle. He then fled the scene.

The woman suffered unspecified injuries, police said previously.

Kawasaki had traveled by bicycle to the area, locted about 21 kilometers from his home Shinagawa, and wandered around. After locating the woman outside, he followed her into the apartment.

Kawasaki was not acquainted with the victim before the incident. However, he had visited Fuchu City for work and is believed to have been familiar with the area.
