KYOTO (TR) – A man suspected in the stabbing of his former girlfriend at a convenience store parking lot in Kyoto City leaped to his death during a chase by police,
At around 11:40 a.m. on December 23, a passerby to the convenience store in Minami Ward alerted emergency services. “A woman was stabbed,” the caller said, reports Nippon News Network (Dec. 23).
According to police, the woman, 53, had been stabbed in the chest. She was conscious upon being transported to a hospital.
The woman was in a relationship with the man, 40, who is suspected in the stabbing. After examining security camera footage, police found the man’s car and gave pursuit.
About an hour later, while police were still pursuing him, the man jumped off an overpass on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway in Nantan City, plunging 10 meters from the deck. He was later confirmed dead at a hospital.
Last month, the woman and the man came to police for advice about relationship troubles. The circumstances that led to the incident, which is being treated as attempted murder, are currently under investigation.
“At this point, we believe that the pursuit was appropriate,” a representative of the Kyoto Prefectural Police said.
