AICHI (TR) – A 70-year-old man on death row over the murders of two men in Manila, Philippines three decades ago has died at a hospital, reports TV Asahi (May 2).
According to the Ministry of Justice, Kazuhiro Matsumoto died at a hospital on Thursday due to hyponatremia, which is a low concentration of sodium in the blood.
According to a court ruling, Matsumoto conspired with his twin brother Akihiro and others to murder two male acquaintances in Manila between 1994 and 1995 in order to collect insurance money.

One of the victims was from Aichi Prefecture. Before the incident, he had taken out a large amount of insurance money on his home.
The Supreme Court dismissed Matsumoto’s appeal in 2007. His death sentence was later finalized. Akihiro who died of illness in 2016.
Matsumoto was detained at the Nagoya Detention House. Since last November, he had been hospitalized for pneumonia and other illnesses.
With Matsumoto’s death, the number of inmates currently on death row now stands at 106.
