Kumamoto: Police to question woman after grandmother found dead

KUMAMOTO (TR) – Kumamoto Prefectural Police are planning to question a woman after her 73-year-old grandmother was found dead at their residence in Yatsushiro City on Sunday, reports the Nishi Nippon Shimbun (Oct. 8).

At around 1:00 a.m., the daughter of Mutsuko Nakayama alerted emergency services after finding her collapsed atop a futon in a room of the residence, located in the town of Mitsueigo. Nakayama’s granddaughter, 24, was also found collapsed nearby.

Emergency personnel arriving at the residence confirmed Nakayama dead at the scene. The daughter was rushed to a hospital with undisclosed injuries not considered life-threatening.

Nakayama lived with her granddaughter at the residence, whose interior showed no signs of having been ransacked, according to the Yatsushiro Police Station.

With the results of an autopsy revealing that Nakayama died due to suffocation, police believe that she was strangled to death.

Police plan to question the granddaughter once she recovers from her injuries.
