Guatemalan man accused of attempting to smuggle 190 kg of meth via aircraft

CHIBA (TR) – Law enforcement on Wednesday announced the arrest of a male Guatemalan over the attempted smuggling of approximately 190 kilograms of methamphetamine by aircraft last year, reports Jiji Press (Feb 12).

On July 10, Angel Eduardo Gonzalez, 31, is alleged to have attempted smuggle 190 kilograms of kakuseizai, or methamphetamine, through Narita International Airport from Guatemala via Hong Kong, Mexico and other countries.

The contraband has a street value of around 12.54 billion yen, according to Chiba Prefectural Police and the Tokyo Customs Narita airport Office.

In October, Gonzalez was arrested and indicted for attempting to smuggle approximately 745 grams of the total amount. He denies the charges.

According to those same sources, the methamphetamine was divided into small portions inside 12 water tanks placed aboard an aircraft.

The seizure is the largest of its kind from an aircraft on record in Japan.
