‘God is watching’ message leads to apprehension of Osaka shrine offerings thief

OSAKA (TR) – To be filed under: His conscious got the better of him.

Maybe.

At around 1:40 a.m. on July 30, a security camera positioned at a shrine Yao City captured a man attempting to pilfer cash from inside the offerings box.

In the footage, the man uses sticky tape to reach into the box in an attempt to retrieve the cash inside. However, he pauses after retrieving one slip of paper.

The words on the paper read: “Coin thief, God is watching. You will be punished by God.”

After stopping and staring at the paper, he gently puts it back in the offerings box.

Police later arrested the man, 51, over a similar case whereby he allegedly stole 2,000 yen. During questioning, he said, “I’ve stolen about 1,000 other items.”

Linking the man to the two cases was the fingerprints he left behind on the paper, police said.

“I did it so that he would change his ways,” said the person presiding over the Yao shrine. “I wanted to say,’Come on, you’ve done enough.’ I was relieved that he was caught.”
