Number of female company presidents in Japan highest on record

TOKYO (TR) – A survey conducted by a private company has found that the percent of companies with female presidents nationwide was more than 8 percent as of October this year, the highest ever.

The company also pointed out that the figure is still low overall, reports NHK (Dec. 10).

Teikoku Databank, a private credit research company, examined the approximately 1.19 million companies nationwide to learn that 8.4 percent are headed by women, the highest figure since comparable data became available in 1990.

However, the increase was only 0.1 percentage points over the year before. Compared to 1990, the increase was only 3.9 percentage points.

By industry, real estate had the highest rate at 17.4 percent, followed by services at 11.3 percent and retail at 11.1 percent.

The government has set a goal of increasing the proportion of women among executives at companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market to 19 percent by 2025, but the reality is that there are still few women in top management positions.

A representative from Teikoku Databank said, “A gradual increase is expected to continue, but in order to develop leaders it is important to create role models and foster opportunities for women to take on challenges.”
