OKINAWA (TR) – A city councilwoman has filed a complaint with the city council here on behalf of citizens over a pig statue erected in 2013 in front of Nago City Hall that features highly exposed testicles, reports the Okinawa Times (Mar. 14).

Nago City councilwoman Kumiko Onaga filed the complaint on behalf of women’s group members and women who take part in city-promoted walking workouts over the statue adjacent the city hall near National Route 58.

A planning committee worked together with breeders of the Agu pig, which is native to Okinawa Prefecture, to erect the statue so it faces tourists traveling north along the highway as part of efforts to promote the local area.

But when viewed from behind, visitors are greeted by the pig’s prominently exposed genitals, which according to the complainants is an unpleasant sight.

Onaga requested that the pig be reoriented and the genitals removed, but the city responded that “no complaints have been received.”

The statue also “can’t be changed because it’s been fixed in place” and “chiseling it would form a cavity,” the city said.

“Home of the Agu”

Onaga pointed out that women were not on the planning committee for the statue. “Women have different views and sensibilities,” the councilwoman said. “It would’ve been good to have a female one and a child or something like that.”

The statue measures about 3 meters long with a height of around 1.70 meters from the stand.

The city erected the statue, nearly three times larger than an average pig, in September 2013 to mark the area as the “Home of the Agu” following its resurgence.
