TOKYO (TR) – A woman was killed after she was struck by a minivan that was hit by an elderly taxi driver trying to change lanes to pick her up, police said on Saturday.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested taxi driver Noriaki Sakamoto, 61, in Adachi Ward for attempting to change lanes to pick up Rena Suzuki, who was hailing a cab, when he collided with the minivan and caused it to veer into the woman at around 9 p.m. on Friday, TV Asahi reports (Dec. 10).

Suzuki died after she was rushed to a hospital with blunt force trauma to her entire body, police said.
