CHIBA (TR) – A man suspected in the illicit filming of a woman was found collapsed with broken bones in a bungled escape attempt that began after he snuck past a snoozing officer during questioning last month, police revealed on Saturday.

On October 22, officers at the Urayasu Police Station were questioning a man, 30, who is suspected of attempting to film up the skirt of a woman with a camera at a tourist site in Urayasu City, when he slipped out of the interrogation room while a 40-year-old officer took a nap, NHK reports (Nov. 5).

Two officers were in the room, but one left to draft papers, leaving the suspect alone with the snoozing officer. The suspect then snuck out of the unlocked room and slipped through the window of a bathroom onto stairs outside.

The suspect was later found collapsed at a school about 250 meters away. He had fractured bones by jumping from the school’s roof, police said.

The suspect will be questioned after he recovers in the hospital, police said.

The officer who took a nap was quoted by police as saying he “ended up getting drowsy,” and is now being investigated for improper conduct.

A representative of the headquarters of the Chiba Prefectural Police said in a statement that it “hopes to prevent future occurrences through stricter instruction.”
