TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police are investigating what is believed to have been a murder-suicide following the discovery of two bodies in Koto Ward, reports Mainichi Shimbun (Sept. 4).

At approximately 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, emergency services received a call from a man who claimed that he had just “killed his wife.” Officers from the Fukagawa Police Station arriving at a residence in the Botan area found the body of a 68-year-old woman lying atop a bed in a bedroom.

About 15 minutes later, police received a tip about the discovery of the body of the woman’s husband, 76, floating in the Sumida River about two kilometers from the residence, which the couple share.

Police suspect that the man killed his wife and then took his own life by jumping into the river. He is believed to have made the call to emergency services via a pay telephone prior to using a bicycle to reach the river.
