HYOGO (TR) – A male driver was arrested on Sunday for causing a 13-car pileup that left five people injured in Kobe.

A 62-year-old male driver of a large trailer from Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, was charged with vehicular negligence resulting in injury after he failed to notice congested traffic and swerved out of his lane, causing a 13-car pileup on No. 2 Shinmei Road at around 3:50 p.m. in Suma Ward on Saturday, the Sankei Shimbun reports (August 7).

The trailer driver failed to notice backed-up traffic near the Tsukimiyama tunnel exit and swerved out of his lane to avoid a collision, only to crash into other vehicles resulting in the pileup.

Traffic police said five people aged 28-59 suffered various light injuries like sprained necks.

The road was closed off for around 5.5 hours.
