KYOTO (TR) – Kyoto Prefectural Police have arrested a male train conductor for West Japan Railway (JR West) on drug charges, the railway confirmed on Tuesday, reports the Asahi Shimbun (July 19).

On June 23, police arrested the employee, 38, for the possession of marijuana. Earlier this month, the employee was dismissed from his post.

According to JR West, the conductor said he did not use marijuana while on duty. He also said that he did not provide any employees of the company with the drug.

The railway company added that the police had requested previously that it not announce the arrest due to the fact that the investigation was ongoing.

“This is a regrettable betrayal of the trust of society,” a representative of the company is quoted. “We will enhance measures to ensure against a recurrence.”
