ISHIKAWA (TR) – A girl in grade school was abducted and held captive by a homeless man, but she was able to escape on her own — by screaming and scaring him away, police said on Monday.

Ishikawa Prefectural Police arrested suspect Kentaro Masui, 28, who is homeless and unemployed, on suspicion of abducting a female grade school student and keeping her confined in an empty apartment room on May 17 in Komatsu City, the Mainichi Shimbun reports (June 21).

Police believe Masui, who has admitted to the charges, called out to the grade school student who was walking alone from school at around 3:30 p.m. He abducted her after she approached him and brought her to a nearby empty apartment room, where he confined her there for around 10 minutes.

According to police, the student screamed as she put up a fight which caused Masui to flee.

The student found her way out of the room and sought help from a nearby adult.
