FUKUI (TR) – Fukui Prefectural Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a infant girl’s corpse at a water treatment plant in Fukui City, reports Nippon News Network (April 1).

At approximately 9:05 a.m. on Friday, a staff member at the Hinogawa Water Treatment Plant found the body, measuring 20 centimeters in length, in an initial screening basin for raw sewage.

The infant was rushed to a nearby hospital where it was confirmed dead.

Since the umbilical cord was still attached and the body unclothed, police believe the infant had been born just before the discovery of its body.

The plant receives sewage from factories and households in Fukui, according to the Sankei Shimbun (April 1).

Police are now seeking the cause of death of the girl.

Update: Police have arrested Mitsuko Araki, 28, for allegedly flushing the body of her newborn baby down a toilet on March 31, reports Nippon News Network (April 7).
