YOKOHAMA (TR) –  Kanagawa Prefectural Police have arrested the son of an 87-year-old woman for dumping her body inside their apartment in Yokohama, reports NHK (Nov. 14).

Takashi Okazaki, a 47-year-old construction worker, put the body of his mother inside a duffle bag after she died of natural causes in March.

Okazaki, who has been charged with abandoning a corpse, admits to the allegations. “I was troubled by money and hid the body in the bag,” the suspect is quoted by police.

On Thursday, a court official searching the apartment, located inside the Konandai Kamome Danchi complex, found the body stuffed inside the bag. Perfume had been left at the scene in what is believed to be an attempt to cover up the odor.

Officials visited the residence due to unpaid rent that had continued over the last few months. As well, the occupants of the residence had been out of contact for an extended period.

On the morning of November 14, police arrested Okazaki, who was found inside a coffee shop in Yokohama.
