Moderate earthquake strikes near TEPCO’s damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant, AP says

TOKYO (TR) – No damages or casualties were reported after a magnitude-5.9 earthquake hit near Japan’s damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Associated Press said.

The quake, which struck at around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, was centered 101 kilometers east of the nuclear facility at a depth of 37 kilometers, AP reported, citing the U.S. Geological Survey.

No tsunami alerts were raised after the quake, the news service said.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami that struck northern Japan on March 11, severely damaged the Fukushima Daiichi plant run by Tokyo Electric Power Company — causing radiation to leak from the facility. As many as 20,000 people died or are missing as a result of that disaster.
