Dim-witted johns put premium on broads with brains

Business at sex shops is bad, bad, bad. So it takes some real creativity to bring in customers. One way to drum up business, reports Nikkan Gendai (June 4), is to flaunt the academic credentials of a shop’s female staff.

A girl’s profile on a deri heru (out-call sex service) web site or in the album of portfolios maintained at the receptions of a walk-in shop might claim that a girl is “currently enrolled in a famous girl’s institution” or “is a co-ed at one of Tokyo’s ‘big six’ private universities.”

Such ruses have been known to result in a 30 to 40 percent jump in shimei (requests by name) from customers.

“It’s the same thing with men’s magazines, which sell more copies if they run pin-up photos of girls who pose nude or semiclad while holding up their student ID card that (supposedly) shows they’re attending a famous school,” says the manager of one *deri-heru*. “Customers are morons. They drool to make it with a high-class, educated woman and are willing to pay more for the privilege.”

Interestingly, Nikkan Gendai notes, when the ordinary kogyaru of the must-own-a-Vuitton variety, i.e., the type who typically toil at tasks in the sex trade, start posing as babes from the bourgeoisie or above, then suddenly — shades of Pygmalion — their speech and mannerisms magically become more refined.

But still, how easy can it be to pull the wool over the leering peepers of a male customer?

Not that hard, apparently.

“Since customers might test them, we make sure they know some very basic stuff, like the name of the train station closest to the school’s campus,” the aforementioned manager adds. “After all, if the girl is found to be fibbing, we might be forced into forking over a refund.”

Yukio Murakami, a writer covering the sex trade, says the going rate to forge a student ID from a famous institution that the faux femmes can flash at a job interview runs as high as 50,000 yen.

“As long as they’re not busu (dogs), the shop will take one look at the card and hire them on the spot,” he says.

The girls generally seek employment at the more upscale shops. If they play their cards right, a phony ID can gain them as much as 10,000 yen more in remuneration for just one hour. And if the customer can persuade them to flaunt the legal restrictions and go all the way, a session of intercourse can earn them an additional 20,000 yen over the standard fee, i.e, double the going rate for a quickie.

These cheating chicks might not be part of the educated elite, but they’ve certainly got plenty of street smarts. (K.S.)
