“It was five or six years ago that I first began to notice more elderly men were going to soaplands,” the unnamed artist, a resident of Tokyo’s former licensed brothel quarters for over half a century, tells Sunday Mainichi (Jan. 29). “At one shop near Ueno, I’d say about 60 percent of the customers are seniors.

“Once reaching the age where their members go soft, men in their 60s can still enjoy stimulating gals with their fingers and tongues,” the artist adds. “They pray to the god of the vagina. Just according it worship is enough to give them peace of mind.”

Kazuo Hoshino, manager of a fashion health massage shop, says his oldest regular client is 85, and he gets plenty of business from men in their 60s and 70s.

“There are those who enjoy ejaculating, and others who are just content to have a drink with a gal or take a bath together,” he says. “Some just take a bath and go home. That’s enough to satisfy any sexual urges that’s built up.”

At an apartment 10 minutes from Takadanobaba Station, seven women await customers. The standard rate is 18,000 yen for 60 minutes and 25,000 for 90 minutes. The prices haven’t changed since 2000.

“We absolutely don’t permit honban (intercourse) here,” says Hoshino. “I suppose the older guys are under less pressure. The system is only by reservation, so they are not made to feel uncomfortable by having to sit beside smug younger guys in the waiting room.”

“My customers are all gentlemen, who don’t try to force me to do things,” says one of the masseuses, a 36-year-old named Madoka. “I was laid off my regular job after last year’s nuclear power plant accident, and was worried that working in the sex industry would be rough, but the customers here are nice to me.”

Hoshino’s “box-type” shop faces increasing competition from deri heru out-call services, which, according to a 2011 National Police Agency white paper (pdf) on adult-entertainment businesses, nearly doubled in number from 8,936 in 2006 to 15,889 four years later.

One such business, named “Four-leaf Clover,” caters to customers from age 60 to 75. Among the services it offers is a “platonic course” for which customers pay 20,000 for two hours, during which the woman will accompany the client for a meal or to the cinema. Those on a tighter budget can opt for the 60-minute “calm down” course at 12,000 yen, which includes a hand job.

“Many customers opt for the platonic course and then afterwards extend for an additional hour with our “health course,” for 18,000 yen,” Takehiko Umeda, the manager, tells the magazine.

One 75-year-old widower is said to be fond of watching adult videos, during which time the lady will fondle his penis and murmur sweet nothings in his ear.

“I’m skeptical that people lose interest in sex as they become older,” says Umeda. “What will do it is sheer day-to-day boredom. With a change of pace and some stimulation, those old fellas will pep up.”

“Men who are now in their 60s were in their 20s and 30s during the 1970s and 80s, when sex in Japan became much more open,” says Kayoko Kageyama, author of a book titled “Sex, Media, and the Sex Business.” “As long as age is no impediment, it shouldn’t be surprising that they patronize sex businesses.” (K.S.)

Yoshiwara is known as the country's largest soapland brothel area

Tokyo’s Yoshiwara district is known as the country’s largest soapland brothel area, offering a plethora of pleasures to please any punter, but exactly once every two months, reports weekly tabloid Shukan Post (Oct. 21), it’s filled with many grinning grandpas game to get it on.

Around the 15th day of even-numbered months, when pension checks are issued, the numerous bathhouses and bordellos that line the rectangular area’s streets become a playground for the Yoshiwara Nenkin-zoku, or the Yoshiwara Pension Tribe.

The magazine believes that this is one example of how the below-the-belt fuzoku industry is targeting the older generation and giving up on younger, more “passive” men, or soshokukei danshi.

“Soaplands that open early remind one of a hospital lobby since they are filled with many older men,” says Akira Ikoma, the editor of a guide to men’s entertainment called Ore no Tabi (My Trip). “That is the case with a place in Ikebukuro, where you can feel-up a gal’s chest. You’ll see many seniors smiling as they enjoy fumbling with their hands.”

Jun Hayakawa, a manager of an out-call aroma therapy service called Precious, located in Ikebukuro, says that his clientele is generally comprised of men in their 50s, but there is also one octogenarian in the bunch. “Many are pension recipients,” the manager explains. “Some are even attempting to sponsor our girls by offering some cash each month, but discourage that kind of thing.”

Aging doesn’t mean that a man will lose his sex drive, Shukan Post assures. Rather, it means that he has more time and maybe a bit of cash — so it’s natural to go have some fun.

Shun Sakai, the owner of the out-call (deri heru) service named Submissive Housewives Living around Tokyu Lines, asks that customers be above 30 years of age. “I myself used to go to fashion health shops in Shibuya but it was uncomfortable,” the manager explains. “Many guys in their 20s will give you cold looks, wondering why a mature person is here to play. It makes it difficult to visit.”

Sakai opened his club six years ago. Ladies are sent to residences or hotels, which allows customers to not meet one another face to face. His clientele breaks down as follows: those in their 30s (5 percent), between 40 and 59 (57 percent), and remainder is represented by those 60 and above, with the highest reaching 75.

The older the customer, the cheaper the rates. For the basic 90-minute course, fees range between 23,000 and 25,000 yen.

Most ladies are in their 30s, which is not standard in Tokyo. “While most men tend to favor 20-year-olds, that is too low for conversation purposes,” Sakai says. “Some also will be concerned that the girls will actually be looking down on them. So, for a temporary date, a mature woman fits better.”

The manager adds that when a lady is bit out of shape it relaxes a man. “We tend to select amateur-looking gals since the image of a professional is not appealing to senior men,” he says.

In fact, a girl was told by a client that her blow-job skills were sub-par. However, this imperfection subsequently made her more appealing.

“The ladies are urban and come with class,” says “Ｉｓａｏ Matsuda,” 64, a regular. “They are kind and full of warmth.”

When a lady arrives at a hotel, she’ll enjoy a chat with the customer for between 30 minutes and an hour. It is a must that he not ask private questions. They’ll then take a bath together.

“It has been five years since I’ve done it with my wife,” says Matsuda. “Since I am releasing my stress via these deri heru gals, I am getting better at becoming more sensitive to my spouse and female colleagues.”

He tells Shukan Post that just prior to the interview he had visited one such establishment.

“I want to go as long as my body allows me,” he smirks. (K.N.)

Serious stick-playing begins after each game's last out

With the pennant races heating up, now is the time for NPB players to be at their best. Yet a feature in Shukan Taishu Venus (August 23) explains that the serious stick-playing begins after each game’s last out — albeit in a fashion that is more discreet than in days gone by.

In Tokyo, heavy hitters used to swing their bats in expensive soaplands in the Yoshiwara brothel district, and that is still true to some degree. “There’s a player with a bancho attitude that comes around,” says a beat writer with a sports paper. “He is a legend for using shops as his post-game shower room. He’ll play with three girls, no problem.”

However, a Yoshiwara street tout tells the tabloid, “We don’t see players come and play here as much as we used to.”

A fuzoku writer — that is, one who covers the sex trade — says that players are tending to use deri heru (delivery health) escort services as a means of discretion. “Since you can use your own hotel,” the source says, “there is no risk of fans or paparazzi finding out. SM clubs seem to be quite popular these days.”

A premier SM deri heru joint based in Akasaka is one example. “This is merely a rumor, but a former middle reliever from a Tokyo-based team, now pitching in the Pacific League, is a regular,” says the same fuzoku hack. “On nights when he gets rocked on the mound, he gets his rocks off with some beautiful honeys at the club, usually with some anal activities.”

These types of services are also popular among players who hang out in a group. “I knew it is someone famous when we got an order from four men staying at a hotel in Akasaka — in which we were instructed to keep it quiet regarding the front desk,” says a manager of a deri heru club in Ikebukuro.

The manager took four of his girls in his van and delivered them to four players from a very popular Central League club. Among them was a crafty infielder, who made things challenging for the girl who serviced him. “I was bit scared because even my soft touch on his shoulder made him upset. He start shouting, saying I missed a spot. He knew so much about massage.”

Then after he finished up, he suddenly asked the gal for her number. When she said that her company’s policy prohibits such an activity, he smiled as if he’d flubbed a grounder.

Nagoya’s Sakae entertainment district is frequented by many visiting teams. “One popular one is a mattress health club that features large-chested gals,” says a local beat writer. “One hour runs 20,000 yen. The place gets good reviews and the tits are really high end.”

A regular is the best closer in the Central League and was a member of the World Baseball Classic roster. “I guess closers endure tremendous pressure,” says the same writer. “This guy seems to get some relief by being covered in lotion.”

But that’s not all.

“He broke his leg few years ago,” the writer continues. “This caused his slider to lose some bite, and fans got nervous watching his games. But the story you hear is that he actually slipped during mattress play, and that’s how he got hurt.”

Sakae is famous for its clubs featuring hitozuma gals — or married women. “I was called to go to a premier hotel in Sakae,” says one escort. “I knew two teams from the Central League use the hotel, but I couldn’t believe I would ever be called for one of them.” The guy waiting for her is a leadoff batter for a Tokyo-based team. He is married to a real knockout, but he told the gal, “I like them a bit chubby and with a chest that’s a bit saggy.”

“That’s why he seems to like married women,” the call girl says. “He went licking all over my chest.”

Sapporo is home to the Nippon Ham Fighters, and visiting teams head to the Susukino entertainment area after games. “Most players call after 11:00 p.m.,” says the manager of a deri heru joint. “Perhaps that’s the time when they return to their hotel room after having dinner. This one pitcher was really fast. He called around 10:00 p.m.”

Shukan Taishu says that the kid turned pro a couple years ago. “While he made the roster this year, he seems to have an attitude problem and is not well perceived by his teammates,” says a sportswriter. “He eats alone after games.”

The manager concurs about his lack of maturity. “He had no class,” he says. “He changed girls twice. One of them said he was really rough and handled her head during a blow-job.”

The magazine even tracked down one call girl who is actually a Hanshin Tigers fan. She remembers a left-handed pitcher from a Tokyo team who was in town.

“It was tough to give him massage as he was all muscle around the shoulder,” she remembers. While he is known for his fastballs, it took him a long time to finish up. “So I let him lick my nipples even though that is not allowed to finally get him off,” she says. “Is he really known for his velocity? I can’t believe Hanshin can’t handle him.”

Sex workers are people too, and they yearn for marriage and family. The fact that many come from broken homes, suggests Nikkan Gendai (May 10), is all the more reason why they desire a normal family life for themselves.

Unfortunately, happy endings are the exception rather than the rule.

Michie, age 29, has been working in a Yoshiwara soapland (erotic bathhouse) for six years, and has seen many of her colleagues desert the sudsy sex trade and head for the altar.

“Probably because of their unhappy childhoods, they all felt strongly about wanting to marry and fix things up,” she says. “But a lot of them are looking for security and tend to marry older men with money, so these gals wind up married to men the same age as their own father. I don’t know why it is, but many of them start taking classes in English conversation, and then go off on trips abroad, where they can pick up men.”

When fuzoku femmes meet customers off the shop premises on dates, one of the first things they want to know is the man’s true financial status.

“They already know through their job about men’s nasty sides, so they don’t easily accord customers their trust,” says Michie. “Some people who patronize soaplands and make a show of having money, when actually they’re up to their ears in debt. Actually men who really have money tend to be modest about it.”

Of course some working girls care more about a man’s character than his bank account. Last year a former deri heru (out-call service) worker named Yuka, age 32, tied the knot with a man three years her junior.

“I’ve had terrible luck with men,” she tells Nikkan Gendai. “Some were two-timers (or three-timers) and others turned violent. My hubby may be a bumbling oaf with a face like a hippo, but at least I don’t have to worry about him cheating on me. I’m grateful he married me. It’s good enough.”

Nevertheless, by the calculation of one veteran soap lady, marriages among some 70 percent of gals in the sex trade are destined to fail within the first three years.

A typical marital spat might take this form.

Husband: Well after all, what can you expect, from a slut who peddled her ass in a soapland?

Wife: Yeah, and I can always go back to doing it — it’s no worse than living with you!

The war of the sexes takes no prisoners. (K.S.)

Early birds arriving at clubs within Tokyo’s various fuzoku districts appear to nowadays be getting the worm — or more correctly, their worm pulled — and for a lot less, reports Shukan Asahi Geino (Jan. 20).

Customers entering the soapland Bunny Club Shy in the Yoshiwara brothel quarter between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. are entitled to 40 minutes of action for a mere 9,500 yen. The tabloid reports that a line forms 20 minutes before opening.

Gals in their 30s and 40s are available, but the article seems particularly intrigued by a lookalike for busty gravure idol Waka Inoue. Rei checks in with a 98-centimeter, H-cup chest and is attired in kimono upon meeting. In the bath, Rei-chan makes skillful use of a sukebe isu, or lecher’s chair, and will then shift the action to the bedroom, where she will complete the service orally.

For a rundown of the top-ten stories thus far in 2010 in the fuzoku trade — that is, businesses offering sexual services — weekly tabloid Shukan Asahi Geino (July 8) turned to Yoshikazu Murazaki, the editor-in-chief of monthly entertainment guide Manzoku.

“Shaking the industry the most has been the deri heru (out-call sex shop) debuts of big-name AV actresses Mai Nadasaka and Kei Megumi at club Muteki in Shibuya and Maria Ozawa at Club Tora no Ana,” explains the editor.

The magazine adds that AV stars had appeared at such establishments in the past but the recent trend has been with bigger names offering their services. “Over the next three months, we expect that even more girls will make their debut,” says the manager of club Muteki.

Ranking second was the June re-opening of Yoshiwara soapland Kakuebi Honten. The magazine supposes that its closing, occurring one-year ago, was due to Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara’s crackdown of sex clubs prior to Tokyo’s bid to be the host of the 2016 Olympics.

Amateurs, too, are making an impact, with clubs specializing in university students being among those offering employment. “Most people think that the reason university gals work in the fuzoku industry is because they can’t find a job elsewhere in this difficult economy,” says Murazaki. “But in fact they simply want to buy a nice handbag, and they can make a decent hourly wage working part-time.”

Murazaki says that much of this is due to those belonging to the yutori sedai, or the generation which came of age when educational standards had been lowered — a time generally considered to have begun in the 1980s. “The number of girls thinking like this is increasing,” he says, referring to their interest in material pursuits. “They don’t have any business sense. But their ‘slow’ and ‘casual’ approach is appealing to some customers.”

Also among the non-professionals are housewives, specifically known as hitozuma, who are considered cheap, erotic and relaxing. Legislation effective from June placed added restrictions on the availability of consumer loans. The co-signing by a spouse is one example. This requirement might force housewives to seek employment at fuzoku clubs to pay off debts unknown to their husbands, the editor postulates.

Other notables cracking the top-ten include the popularity of Chinese massage parlors in Shimbashi, Ikebukuro and along the Chuo Line, the busting of a huge high-end deri heru service and the closing of publication Tokyo Manzoku News due to competition from the Internet.

Murazaki ends his roundup with a niche category: the hazure fuzokuten (loser sex clubs). Girls staffed at these establishments have been dubbed jirai, literally “land mines,” and are very unattractive or overweight, perhaps having failed interviews at other places.

No service, no hospitality and “land mine looks” (i.e. handle with care) — the shops are mainly for maniacs who have a fetish for these types of ladies, the editor says of jirai joints. “Some customers will use them to conclude a batsu game,” Murazaki explains, referring to a competition in which the loser must be punished, “and their popularity is on the rise.”

The magazine lists deri heru club Uguisudani Dead Ball in Tokyo’s Taito Ward as one jirai option. (A.T)

Customer blacklist for a famous sex shop in Nagoya leaked onto the Internet

When customers at sex shops get a little too frisky or imaginative, causing injury and/or humiliation to the female staff, management is left with little choice but to yank in the welcome mat.

It’s bad enough to be turned away from play for pay, but to make matters worse, reports Weekly Playboy (June 28), it seems that through a flaw in Winny, a notorious file-sharing program, the customer blacklist for a famous sex shop in Nagoya was leaked onto the Internet.

Along with the customer names were details of what they had done to wear out their welcomes. “He repeatedly blew air into the girl’s vagina and then pushed down on her stomach,” read one. “He bites girls’ genitals,” read another.

“Shops will typically draw up a blacklist to protect their girls from problem customers,” “pink” journalist Mitsuru Hayakawa tells the magazine. “Especially since intercourse is a violation of the law regulating public morals, the management has no choice but to shield the girls to discourage them from reporting such activities to the police. So naturally one thing that will get a customer blacklisted is to insist on intercourse.”

Customers can also get in trouble for reserving a girl and then not showing up.

Weekly Playboy, however, seems most interested in customers who are banned from the premises through activities that the girls simply can’t stomach.

“I used my entire 60 minutes of allotted time for anus-licking, but the girl was disgusted and reported it to the manager, so I’ve been banned from the shop,” says a man identified as Mr. A.

A woman employed at a soapland (erotic bathhouse) in Tokyo’s Yoshiwara district, meanwhile, tells the magazine there is one customer who is just “too sexually powerful” for his own good.

“He can achieve three orgasms in a short duration,” she winces. “He’s become notorious among the girls in Yoshiwara.”

Nevertheless Weekly Playboy points out that something detested by one girl might actually be enjoyed by another.

“As long as there’s no permanent damage, I’m willing to go along with almost anything,” one girl informs the reporter. “One customer even begged me to scribble graffiti on his face. It seems a classmate did that to him when he was in high school, and he got tremendously turned on.”

Hayakawa advises readers how to avoid getting on a shop’s blacklist.

“It’s important to explain what you want to the shop beforehand. They don’t like nasty surprises. But sometimes, once she knows what’s on your mind the girl will be more than willing to go along.” (K.S.)

Determining that an ad in a recent edition of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper was a tad over the top — given the appearance of a popular adult video (AV) actress — weekly tabloid Shukan Bunshun (Apr. 22) defends its typically titillating turf by calling the conservative daily into account for its actions.

Placed on page 25 of the April 2 edition was an advertisement for an “energy-enhancement” supplement. “It builds men’s confidence,” reads the copy. Positioned next to the large headline is a very sexy lady. She is 39-year-old Reiko Shimura, who is given the titles of “exclusive advisor” for Horiki, the name of the medicinal product, and “V-Cinema actress,” which refers to direct-to-video film productions.

Her debut in the latter industry — more accurately described as AV, or porn — was at the age 35. She is still actively involved, having performed in 230 features, mainly as a “mature” actress.

“Two years ago, she retired and became a soapland gal in Yoshiwara,” says a writer, a careful follower of Shimura’s career, about her work in Tokyo’s brothel quarter. “But she had to quit due to medical issues.”

She returned to AV in January of this year.

“Mature women are the leading genre in porn,” says Torajiro Yamamoto, who is an expert on the industry. “Ladies in their 40s and 50s are the driving force behind this popularity. Men who are too tired or stressed out from their daily lives can find comfort in down-to-earth, mature women.”

Shimura tells Shukan Bunshun that she received more than one call about her appearance in the Asahi. “Some suggested that the letter ‘A’ was missing in ‘V-Cnema actress,’” she grins.

The picture used for the aphrodisiac ad was taken two years ago. The parent company, Shinko Tsuhan, told the tabloid that it has been placing these ads in newspapers once a month for about a year.

“You couldn’t imagine the Asahi allowing this kind of thing in the past,” says an individual from within the advertisement industry. “Every company has standards for ads that can appear. The Asahi didn’t include performance-enhancement products previously. However, the text does not say AV. It also reads ‘food supplement,’ which is acceptable. So they crafted the expressions carefully.”

The industry insider estimates that such a placement would cost around 8 million yen for a nationwide version and roughly half that if targeting Tokyo only.

Shukan Bunshun says that Shimura’s appearance shows that even the Asahi has had to change its stance given the continuing drop in advertising revenue.

“We evaluated it on the basis of the standards set for health products and decided to go forward,” read a statement from the Asahi’s public relations department.

The article includes a photo of Asahi president Kotaro Akiyama and smirks in closing: What has happened to your pride? (K.N.)

Source: “‘Moto soopujo’ AV joyu ga tou Asahi no puraido,” Shukan Bunshun (Apr. 22, page 35)

In September 2008, a 23-year-old employee of a cabaret club (kyabakura) approached real estate operator Yu Shimojo, 41, for a loan, saying she needed money to care for her sick parents. Shimojo said he would lend her 850,000 yen on the condition that she work it off in a Yoshiwara soapland.

With interest added, reports Nikkan Gendai (Feb. 10), the woman agreed to pay back Shimojo 1,030,000 yen. The shop where she toiled was one of the more reasonable places in Yoshiwara, charging customers a comparatively cheap 20,000 yen for 70 minutes of sudsy recreation.

The woman took up residence in the bathhouse’s dormitory, from which she was not permitted to leave outside of her working hours.

The timing of her bathhouse employment was particularly inauspicious in that she began servicing the debt just when the “Lehman Shock” precipitated a worldwide recession. Bathhouse clientele tapered off drastically, while the remaining balance of her loan more than tripled.

Realizing she faced an eternity of white slavery, the woman fled the shop and took her tale of woe to the police, who found that Shimojo had lined up similar jobs for several other women.

Shimojo and erotic bathhouse manager Minoru Nagashima, 64, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of violating the anti-prostitution law.

“The shop’s entire monthly turnover only came to around 3 million yen,” says a source in the sex industry. “The girls’ earnings ran from 10,000 to 15,000 per day, and at that rate there was no way they could pay off their debt.

“Before, when times were good, a popular girl could have easily worked off a debt of 3 million in a year’s time, but not these days,” the source adds. “Some soapland masseuses at Yoshiwara who have fallen behind on their payments even moonlight as call girls. The typical pattern is for them work at the soaplands until midnight, then go to date clubs at Uguisudani.

“The soaplands know about the moonlighting but look the other way. They aren’t able to pay the girls a decent wage, after all.”

It seems increasing numbers of hard-up young women in their 20s are turning to soaplands for their livelihood. But a glut of females working in the sex industry can also create problems for society, Nikkan Gendai frets. (K.S.)

About five or six years ago, a male pensioner, while seated in a hospital waiting room to see the doctor, was informed by a fellow retired patient about a third-tier, cheapo erotic bathhouse in Tokyo’s Yoshiwara district where the cost of admission ran only 11,000 yen. He promptly began patronizing it, and never fails to pay a visit every other month after his pension payment arrives at his bank.

Now, reports the writer of the series “Heisei soap-gai onna to kane sugoi hanashi” (Fantastic tales of women and money at Heisei-era soaplands) in Nikkan Gendai (Dec. 21), it’s become quite common for elderly men to drop into Yoshiwara for some tender, loving care.

“Mostly they just talk, complaining to me about stuff like family spats with their sons and daughters in law,” says “Ms. A,” a 35-year-old masseuse at a low-priced soapland. “While they’re pouring out their woes about how their bitchy daughter in law won’t speak to them, they squeeze my hand.

“As far as sex goes, they might stroke my butt for a while. Then when the time’s up they’ll smile on the way out, saying ‘See you two months from now.’”

So it would seem that for a majority of seniors who drop by, getting off with a gal is not the main objective of their visit. It’s at least as important to find someone who will lend a sympathetic ear.

As incredible as it may seem, Ms. A says one of her regulars is a 96-year-old codger who drops by once a month on his way home from the hospital.

This sexually oriented senior citizen apparently finds euphoric satisfaction just by stretching out on the massage table and running his wrinkled, liver-spotted digits over A’s epidermis.

Well, there’s nothing like a young chicken to put the spring back in one’s old bone(s). And a lady in her mid-30s is “young,” right? Well, she certainly is young — to a naughty nonagenarian, winks Nikkan Gendai. (K.S.)
