Ribald rides a plenty during the holidays

“There are too damn many of these outrageous people incurring on our oasis!” explodes a 45-year-old tank truck driver to Shukan Taishu (May 7-14). He’s upset because the parking area where he and his fellow drivers pull off the road to doze and relax is being turned into a “sex haven.”

“Last year’s Golden Week was particularly awful,” he continues. “A lot more of my mates were sleeping in their trucks to save money, and the parking lots were crammed full of regular passenger car drivers and their girlfriends who were getting it on in their cars. One reason is that there’s this service area (he names one located on the Tomei Expressway in Shizuoka Prefecture) with access to an onsen (mineral hot springs) so people just take a bath and then sleep in their car.

“We can’t see anything because they have curtains on their windows, but we can hear the women moaning and saying stuff like, ‘Go in deep, all the way,’ and so on.”

The aforesaid hot springs has also taken on the characteristics of an amusement park, which attracts lots of young couples. The 53-year-old driver of a sightseeing bus tells the magazine: “Well, it’s also got a planetarium and Ferris wheel. Lots of the young couples who spend the day together get it on right on the bus. And since there are no curtains, people can see in too.”

“I even saw these two university students doing 69 on each other on the long seat in the back,” the driver continues. “The guide on our bus was blushing red all the way to her ears.”

A 39-year old driver of a refrigerated truck claims he can beat that: While at the rest area off the Chuo Expressway en route to Yamanashi Prefecture, he pulled up behind two passenger minivans that were parked unusually close to each other.

“That struck me as strange,” he relates. “And I saw that both of the cars were jiggling on their springs, and it was then I noticed that the cars on the left and right were situated so that their doors were open on the sides facing each other.

“After watching them for a while, I saw a completely naked woman who looked to be around 30 jump from the car on the right into the one on the left. A moment later a slender, attractive girl with dyed auburn hair jumped from the car on the left to the one on the right. Not long afterward both vehicles started bouncing on their suspensions again…”

Susumu Matsuyama, a writer covering the sex business, tells the magazine, “There are ‘kappuru kissa’ (swapping coffee shops) for couples in the city, but not in the countryside. So people who meet up on the Internet want to meet up at some isolated place and a service area fills the bill. First they perform sex with each other looking on, and then if things click, they swap partners.”

So if you pull off the road during Golden Week motor trip, you’d best be prepared for anything, Shukan Taishu warns. (K.S.)

Gumshoes share their experiences

In the past, it was usually suspicious wives who hired private detectives to reveal the sordid details of their husbands’ infidelity. But times have indeed changed, and as Shukan Taishu (Apr. 24) reports, a lot of husbands who have been pondering divorce find it practical to retain the services of professional peepers to procure proof that their wives have been cheating on them.

Some of these gumshoes share their experiences with the magazine.

“There was this young wife who rented an apartment not far from her home, where she could go to meet with her lover,” one relates. “She seemed like a pretty straight-laced female, and very attractive. Afterwards we found out she was enjoying a fling with her boss at work, who had already been divorced from two previous wives. We turned over photos and a written report to her husband.

“The husband then confronted her boss, who said to him, ‘My intentions about her are serious. If it’s a matter of money, this is all I can give you,’ and handed him an envelope with 3 million yen. The client decided to divorce her, and she’s now living together with her boss.”

In another case, an attractive married woman in her early 30s had a propensity toward domestic violence, kicking her husband and once bashing him with a frying pan. She was also verbally abusive, but the husband put up with that, until she moved out with their daughter and rented a “weekly manshon.”

One day, the daughter told her father, “Papa, recently when I went to stay with mama there was a man with her, and they did something together while they were naked.”

The husband employed an investigation agency and discovered that his wife was enjoying a fling with her boss at work.

“When we submitted the report to her husband, he sighed and said, ‘Finally I can divorce her.’ Naturally he looked happy,” the detective said.

“We were once asked to look into a suspicious case in which a married woman had used her home as collateral for a loan of two million yen,” Masashi Fukuda, director of the Teikoko Detective Agency in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward, tells Shukan Taishu. “Her husband was a self-employed man in his 50s and she was 10 years younger.

“While petite, the wife has disproportionally large breasts.

“We assigned a tail and found she was making it with a young guy from Hokkaido. As it turned out, the two, both dog lovers, had met via an Internet social media site. They finally met in person at a Tokyo coffee shop, and wound up going to a hotel together.

“Apparently she gave the money she’d borrowed to assist her boyfriend, who was not well off financially.”

Shigeo Awano, director of an Osaka-based investigation agency, tells the magazine of its tailing of a man’s wife to a supermarket, where she had boarded a man’s car in the parking lot.

“They drove to a love hotel. When we told the husband he was infuriated. Then he met his wife’s lover and found that he was a personal friend (of the husband). But when he confronted his wife, she turned on him, saying “You’re such a hopeless incompetent — you’re lousy at your job and even had to hire private detectives to watch me!

“When tailing another wife, a young woman in her 20s, we found out she was working at a hote-toru (a type of underground erotic bathing service operating out of hotels). When the husband was presented with the evidence, he broke down in tears, blurting out, ‘She does it because my salary is so low!’” (K.S.)

'Say, won't you buy me? I'll do it for 5,000 yen'

Ten years have passed since the deregulation of the taxi industry in Japan. And now the general consensus is that there are too many cars on the road, and not enough customers for them.

“You should see the cars line up on the streets around Kabukicho, around the time the bars start closing, with nary a passenger in sight” a reporter from the desk of a local newspaper tells Shukan Taishu (Apr. 9).

Since drivers seem to have more time on their hands, there’s a story making the rounds that an attractive young woman has been coming on to them.

Her technique is to board the car and once settled into the back seat, show a lot of leg and proposition the driver.

One driver, while waiting in a queue, saw the woman get out of the car in front of him, who refused to carry the woman.

He then relates, “She got in my car and said to me, ‘Say, won’t you buy me? I’ll do it for 5,000 yen.’”

“So hell yes, I was surprised,” one driver tells the magazine. “Usually I’m used to hearing customers ask for discounts for long-distance fares.

“Naturally I’d be interested, but I was at work, and I sensed it might lead to trouble. I told her no, and asked her to get out of the car.”

The driver said he knew the driver in the queue who’d refused to carry up the woman. “Afterwards he told me she’d asked him for 10,000 yen,” he chuckles. “She must have been getting desperate, and offered it to me for half price.”

This technique, of catering to cabbies, seems to be a new form of streetwalking that’s been catching on around the city.

Another driver said he was propositioned by a woman who appeared to be in her 50s while waiting in a queue at a certain station on Tokyo’s Yamanote Line.

“At stations around drinking areas, it’s become pretty common after the trains stop running,” says a veteran cabbie. “Not long ago, two of them in my car said to me, ‘How about buying our panties? We’ll take them off for you right on the spot.’”

After scouring the city, the reporter finally finds a driver willing to relay his account of scoring with an lady who’s described as a dead ringer for popular actress Erika Toda.

“It was about 2:00 a.m. on a February night,” recalls the 54-year-old cabbie, a divorcee. “I was cruising on a main drag lined with lots of famous boutiques, and she flagged me down. As soon as she got in the car she began making a sales pitch.”

“It struck me as being strange,” the driver continues. I suppose it was unlikely she was a pro — probably an OL. Naturally at first I refused, but she said she’d do it for 5,000 yen. ‘C’mon, I’ve been standing out in the cold. Can’t you give a girl a break?’ she pleaded.”

Since he couldn’t very well pull his car into a hotel, the driver went looking for a suitable spot on a lonely back street.

She climbed in front and helped the driver remove his trousers and shorts, and promptly went down on him.

“She was really skilled,” the driver said, rolling his eyes. “After sucking me with her soft inner lips, she took me as far as I could go.”

The with speed and technique that comes only from experience, she removed her panties, cranked the driver’s seat to the horizontal position and the two were soon making the beast with two backs.

Afterwards the driver was somewhat unnerved to see the woman looking at his name plate.

“It displays the driver’s name and company name,” says Yukio Murakami, an authority on the sex industry. “So if he gets rough with her, or refuses to pay, she would be able to track him down and make trouble. When you think about it, there’s no safer John for girls in the business than a taxi driver.”

Legislation prohibits ordinary citizens from assisting criminal organizations

On October 5, the National Police Agency announced a revision to the Anti-Organized Crime Law to be submitted to the ordinary session of the Diet. The initiative follows anti-gang ordinances adopted by all prefectures and administrative divisions that same month.

Crucially to the general public, the latter legislation prohibits ordinary citizens from assisting the business activities of criminal organizations.

Media outlets, celebrities, and the sporting world have subsequently been monitoring their own activities.

Shukan Taishu Venus (Feb. 22) sets about determining what commoners can do to protect themselves from unknowingly associating with crime syndicates.

There are thousands of yakuza front companies operating in Japan, says the tabloid. “I used to work at such an organization,” confesses a freelance writer. “Many other employees did not know, however, that a gang group was behind it.”

To avoid working for such a firm, the writer suggests research. “You should at least check the company’s name on the net,” the source says. “While it is important to see what users on bulletin boards say, what’s crucial is to know the number of years it has been in business and its history.”

Companies that change their names and lines of businesses frequently are suspect, says the writer, adding: “Companies that use simple English words such as ‘consultant’ or ‘create’ following a name is certainly dubious as it is an attempt to establish a good image just from the sound of the name.”

The magazine then refers to a television ad campaign that featured a popular actress and a handsome corporate managing director. The director’s company boasted of conditions that appeared too good to be true, which, according to the writer, when placed next to the sharp appearance of the executive raised alarms regarding gang ties. “Gangsters rely on popularity,” the writer says. “Being handsome is as valuable as being good at fighting.”

Lack of vertical movement within a company is also a warning sign. In working for a family-owned business, the tabloid says, it is difficult for employees to be promoted to upper-management because such positions are already occupied by relatives. Yakuza front companies operate in a similar manner.

“These companies, to a degree, become bi-polar,” explains the writer. “On one side, there are employees who simply don’t know what’s going on. Basically, they are treated the same as deceived customers. The companies wind up just using them.”

The tabloid conncludes that employees at firms with only handsome men above them might want to reconsider their options. (A.T.)

Big-name celebrities and sports stars are regulars

In November, Japanese prosecutors arrested Mototaka Ikawa, 47, the former chairman of Daio Paper, after he admitted to a breach of trust in connection to 10.6 billion yen borrowed largely for gambling purposes.

“In the beginning, he used to go to gambling joints in Japan,” a reporter for a national paper tells weekly tabloid Shukan Taishu (Dec. 12). “But he eventually went overseas, where he was able to bet higher. He then became addicted.”

The tabloid says that Ikawa started in the murky underworld of illegal Japanese casinos — establishments that big-name celebrities and sports stars also frequent.

(It should be noted that, aside from motorbike, horse, boat, and bicycle racing, gambling is prohibited in Japan. Pachinko is not classified as gambling.)

A former casino dealer, now retired, says that Baccarat is the most common game in these parlors, which are known to spring up in red-light districts. “With its simple rules, many will fall for it,” the source says.

The former casino employee is not surprised to see what has happened with Ikawa as many customers rack up large losses. The key for the casino, the former dealer says, is to create a cycle within the clientele whereby breaks are given to losing gamblers if they invite associates to play.

“A few years ago, there was a professional baseball player who was a regular,” the former dealer says, adding that the player in question was drafted in the ’80s and remains a big name today. “While he was not comparable to Ikawa, as far as level, everyone knew he was putting a lot on the line.”

But he racked up big losses. To offset the amount, the casino asked him to extend an invitation to a younger teammate, known as a solid contact hitter, to join.

“The scheme is well designed so that when a person faces a large loss they are forced to supply a referral for another person of equal income level,” the former dealer explains.

Ken Kitashiba, a crime analyst, explains that casino money is a source of funds for organized crime groups. “In the beginning, underground casinos were 10-yen poker games found in the backs of cafes,” the analyst says.

In the early ’90s, extravagantly designed establishments started to take hold in the Shinjuku and Roppongi entertainment areas of Tokyo.

This trend escalated, with bets of ten million yen not being unusual. “Rich and famous people are easy targets for these illegal casinos,” the former dealer says. “Casinos conduct background checks for their clients, including relationships with women, so that there is no escape.”

Perhaps such a scheme was behind the downfall of Ikawa?

“People like Ikawa hold a high status in society,” explains the former underground casino employee. “Just like baseball players, they are ideal targets.” (A.T.)

A service sells the phone numbers of women engaged in amateur prostitution

Moshi-moshi, is this Kana-san? I was given your number by our mutual friend Mr. T.”

“Hai, but I’m at work right now. Would you mind calling me back later?”

From the various sounds audible in the background, it would appear that Kana, as advertised, is a genuine OL (office lady).

The reporter for Shukan Taishu (Oct. 10) exhales with excitement; it looks like he’s on to a really hot story.

“Currently in Nagoya, there’s a service that sells the phone numbers of women who are into enjo kosai (amateur prostitution),” the unnamed writer for the pink trade had told him. “It’s really popular. There’s a good chance it will catch on in Tokyo as well, maybe as soon as the end of September.”

The way the new system works is that the members joining the “club” pay an initiation fee of 5,000 yen and an additional 5,000 yen for each telephone number. To access the numbers at the club’s office, they enter a private cubicle where several paper files are stacked on the counter. Each file contains about 50 profiles of women. They are organized by type, such as university students, OLs, housewives, and so on. The data includes their height, vital measurements, where they want to be taken on “dates” and other information. There are also salacious entries about the ways in which they enjoy having sex.

According to the operator (the aforementioned Mr. T), business has been booming.

“Yes, especially on Thursday and Friday nights, since Toyota began giving its staff those days off to conserve electric power,” the pink reporter adds, noting that each reservation is concluded on a case-by-case basis. Housewives, for example, are usually only available during the midday.

Shukan Taishu’s writer sets up a dinner date with Kana for the following evening.

Fortunately, she appears just like her photo, and she’s a doll.

“A friend talked me into signing up two months ago, she tells the reporter. “Why? I want more money of course. I work for a company in the IT sector, but the salary’s lousy.”

Nevertheless Kana tells the reporter she has to like a guy to go all the way with him. “My going rate is 30,000 yen, but if I am turned off physically, I won’t do it at any price,” she says, adding, “I would never consider going pro. The houses are all cutting prices these days, and I’ve heard the Johns there are mostly grubby laborer types.”

But not all is well in Nagoya’s flesh market. Kana also says that of late, cabaret hostesses have been encroaching on her telephone territory.

“They’ll register their phone number with the service, but after the John buys them dinner they’ll say, ‘Sorry I’ve gotta go to work now, will you come with me for some drinks at our shop?’ If the guy refuses, then that’s it — and he’s out the cost of a meal.” (K.S.)

Serious stick-playing begins after each game's last out

With the pennant races heating up, now is the time for NPB players to be at their best. Yet a feature in Shukan Taishu Venus (August 23) explains that the serious stick-playing begins after each game’s last out — albeit in a fashion that is more discreet than in days gone by.

In Tokyo, heavy hitters used to swing their bats in expensive soaplands in the Yoshiwara brothel district, and that is still true to some degree. “There’s a player with a bancho attitude that comes around,” says a beat writer with a sports paper. “He is a legend for using shops as his post-game shower room. He’ll play with three girls, no problem.”

However, a Yoshiwara street tout tells the tabloid, “We don’t see players come and play here as much as we used to.”

A fuzoku writer — that is, one who covers the sex trade — says that players are tending to use deri heru (delivery health) escort services as a means of discretion. “Since you can use your own hotel,” the source says, “there is no risk of fans or paparazzi finding out. SM clubs seem to be quite popular these days.”

A premier SM deri heru joint based in Akasaka is one example. “This is merely a rumor, but a former middle reliever from a Tokyo-based team, now pitching in the Pacific League, is a regular,” says the same fuzoku hack. “On nights when he gets rocked on the mound, he gets his rocks off with some beautiful honeys at the club, usually with some anal activities.”

These types of services are also popular among players who hang out in a group. “I knew it is someone famous when we got an order from four men staying at a hotel in Akasaka — in which we were instructed to keep it quiet regarding the front desk,” says a manager of a deri heru club in Ikebukuro.

The manager took four of his girls in his van and delivered them to four players from a very popular Central League club. Among them was a crafty infielder, who made things challenging for the girl who serviced him. “I was bit scared because even my soft touch on his shoulder made him upset. He start shouting, saying I missed a spot. He knew so much about massage.”

Then after he finished up, he suddenly asked the gal for her number. When she said that her company’s policy prohibits such an activity, he smiled as if he’d flubbed a grounder.

Nagoya’s Sakae entertainment district is frequented by many visiting teams. “One popular one is a mattress health club that features large-chested gals,” says a local beat writer. “One hour runs 20,000 yen. The place gets good reviews and the tits are really high end.”

A regular is the best closer in the Central League and was a member of the World Baseball Classic roster. “I guess closers endure tremendous pressure,” says the same writer. “This guy seems to get some relief by being covered in lotion.”

But that’s not all.

“He broke his leg few years ago,” the writer continues. “This caused his slider to lose some bite, and fans got nervous watching his games. But the story you hear is that he actually slipped during mattress play, and that’s how he got hurt.”

Sakae is famous for its clubs featuring hitozuma gals — or married women. “I was called to go to a premier hotel in Sakae,” says one escort. “I knew two teams from the Central League use the hotel, but I couldn’t believe I would ever be called for one of them.” The guy waiting for her is a leadoff batter for a Tokyo-based team. He is married to a real knockout, but he told the gal, “I like them a bit chubby and with a chest that’s a bit saggy.”

“That’s why he seems to like married women,” the call girl says. “He went licking all over my chest.”

Sapporo is home to the Nippon Ham Fighters, and visiting teams head to the Susukino entertainment area after games. “Most players call after 11:00 p.m.,” says the manager of a deri heru joint. “Perhaps that’s the time when they return to their hotel room after having dinner. This one pitcher was really fast. He called around 10:00 p.m.”

Shukan Taishu says that the kid turned pro a couple years ago. “While he made the roster this year, he seems to have an attitude problem and is not well perceived by his teammates,” says a sportswriter. “He eats alone after games.”

The manager concurs about his lack of maturity. “He had no class,” he says. “He changed girls twice. One of them said he was really rough and handled her head during a blow-job.”

The magazine even tracked down one call girl who is actually a Hanshin Tigers fan. She remembers a left-handed pitcher from a Tokyo team who was in town.

“It was tough to give him massage as he was all muscle around the shoulder,” she remembers. While he is known for his fastballs, it took him a long time to finish up. “So I let him lick my nipples even though that is not allowed to finally get him off,” she says. “Is he really known for his velocity? I can’t believe Hanshin can’t handle him.”

30-year veteran explains tricks of trade

Time for a quiz: You want to come on to a perfectly respectable looking married lady who you spot on your train. Which of the three places is most likely to elicit a favorable response? A) Aboard the train; B) on the platform; or C) at a public place outside the station area.

“If you’re going to approach a married woman, the important thing is not to scare her. So the right answer is B,” Kazuki Uesugi tells Shukan Taishu (Mar. 28).

“A would come across as recklessly impulsive, giving the impression of lacking common sense,” Uesugi points out, “And C might make the woman feel that she’s being stalked.”

Uesugi ought to know. As a 30-year veteran street scout, he’s recruited over 1,000 women into sex industry jobs — about 300 of whom were married at the time.

“Wives have concerns and curiosity, just like any other women, and there are methods for seducing them just like seducing anyone else,” Uesugi claims.

The key to determining which ones can be persuaded to sell their bodies for money is a fine art that requires a discerning eye and finely honed negotiating skills.

“Master the techniques,” says Uesugi, “and you’ll get a high percentage of the ones you approach to sign up and go to work.”

The first thing to understand, says Uesugi, is that you’re not going to find these ladies prowling the streets in adult entertainment zones.

“The places to go are on trains, 100-yen shops, DVD rental shops and other places where you’d expect ordinary housewives to be. They aren’t used to being propositioned, so to speak.”

Scout K’s mission impossible, if he chooses to accept, is to recruit housewives to appear in adult videos.

So video rental shops are actually a good place to hunt such women, K says, because one, the women who go there have time on their hands to watch movies, and two, because they’re seeking stimulation.

But the worst thing you can do is approach them with such worn-out pickup lines as “How about a cup of tea?” or “Would you like to be a model?” Instead you have to be creative.

The ice-breaker for K is “Eh? Aren’t you Yuki-chan?”

“She’ll reply, ‘I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else,’ and you reply, ‘Oh gosh, I’m sorry, you’re right. But you sure are pretty. Hey, what do you say you let me buy you a cuppa.’”

The response he wants to hear is, “You’re putting me on, right?” followed by a giggle. Then he knows she’ll talk to him.

Another scout, M, says he sizes up women by their type of attire. Those with garments that button in the front are usually guarded and wary, so it’s better to look for those in more casual gear such as trainers, T-shirts or garments that don’t have buttons.

“They don’t think they’ll be propositioned wearing such clothing, so if you come on to them they’ll be pleasantly surprised,” says M.

A woman’s method of makeup can also be a giveaway.

“There are lots of women who don’t get along that well with their husbands, and when they go out they’re almost hoping to find some action,” M continues. “One thing they are almost unaware of themselves is their lipstick. The ones who put on a high gloss are subconsciously craving male attention.”

Uesugi says one surefire way to reel them in is not to overdo it by talking too much.

“Married women love to listen to other people’s troubles or dalliances,” he warns. “But listening can be enough to relieve their stress, and there’s a strong chance just talking will satisfy them. Overdo the conversation and you’ll never hook them into a job.” (K.S.)

From the title of our story, writes Shukan Taishu (Feb. 28), we know what you’re probably thinking. “Yeah, right, another one of those made-up stories from a sleazy weekly tabloid, designed to give its male readers a woody.” Right?

But the magazine insists it’s true. A surprising number of office ladies like to go waltzing into the lavatory and stimulate their matildas to orgasm.

For the poop on the scoop, Shukan Taishu goes to Ms. Y, age 53, who works part-time for an office clean-up crew.

“Almost anybody who does our work has at least once or twice gone into the ladies’ room had heard peculiar noises emanating from the lavatory stall,” she says. “It happened to me not so long ago.”

It was around 11:00 a.m. Y had gone in to tidy up and noticed all three stalls in the room were occupied.

“It wasn’t that loud, but I distinctly heard a weird sound, and then a sharp intake of breath, like ‘nnnn, unnn, ahhh!,’” she relates. “At first I though someone in there might be sick, but from previous experiences I had a pretty good idea of what was going on.”

And then the noise became even louder — so loud, in fact, that Y decided the best thing to do was leave the room and wait outside.

“I saw her come out soon afterwards,” says Y. “She was a really lovely gal who works at the accounting office on the 6th floor. From her looks I never would have imagined she’d, uh, you know, be doing that kind of thing.”

Y says she’s under the impression that this wank break phenomenon is on the increase. A colleague we’ll call M told her that once she went in to clean the ladies’ room around 6 a.m. at an IT company where many staff worked night shifts.

“I heard these funny sounds from the stall. I guess she’d been working all night and needed to let off steam.”

And sometimes the cleaning ladies find discarded condoms mixed in with the sanitary napkins.

“I suppose they slip a condom over their fingers to keep their nail polish from getting flaked off inside,” says M.

Shukan Taishu finally gets a female to ‘fess up that she’s guilty of such bawdy behavior. Her name is Masami (a pseudonym), she’s 24 and works at a foodstuffs manufacturer.

“After you pee, you have to wipe, right?” she says. “Quite a lot of girls give it an extra rub for good measure and it feels great. It’s not really that erotic, but if you do it right you can cum in less than a minute,” she giggles.

In Masami’s case, she’d become aroused after viewing a raunchy comic on her cell phone during her lunch break.

Women are truly remarkable creatures. Back in her high school days, Masami had a friend who could easily achieve female ejaculation while standing.

“It was like watching a guy stand up and pee,” she said. “She took pride in being able to shoot off right into the commode,” Masami recalls. (K.S.)

What would you like to eat, sir?

“So desu ne. . . How about bringing me a mug of draft beer, five sticks of yakitori, some edamame and, uh, a woman.”

“Kashikomarimashita. Comin’ right up.”

It’s unlikely the above conversation ever took place, but that doesn’t mean something along those lines never happened. Shukan Taishu (Feb. 7) reports that as one result of the intensified competition at izakaya (Japanese-style pubs), shops have been giving first priority to hiring young and cute waitresses.

“These days in Tokyo telephone booths and public toilets in parks and so on, you see handwritten advertising fliers pasted up. Their contents boggle the mind,” a “pink” industry reporter tells the magazine.

One such flyer, measuring about 10 centimeters square, read, “If you request a Chinese employee Ms. So-and-so, she can fix you up with a girl.”

When the reporter phoned the restaurant named on the flyer to confirm the contents, he was told that particular Chinese woman was no longer employed by the shop. But upon further urging its manager admitted that the woman had been sleeping with male customers on the side.

“Some customers got a bit tipsy and would jokingly come on to her, saying, ‘Hey, let’s get it on,’ and she’d comply,” the manager admitted.

The reporter tracked the shop were the action was to one of a chain of five.

When the waitress brought beer and a plate of gyoza (Chinese pot-stickers), he asked her, “Are you from China?”

“Yes, I’m here studying at a university,” she replied.

With a clean-cut and innocent appearance, she did not look at all like the sort of person who’d engage in pimping.

He then dropped a hint, saying, “Actually, I saw that flyer and I, uh. . .”

Rumor had it that she could tap into a stable of all-Chinese exchange students available in a jiffy for 15,000 yen and up.

But unfortunately the woman feigned complete ignorance of the flyer.

“I don’t know anything about that,” she said, shaking her head in denial.

Could the posting of the flyers been an act of malicious mischief by a disgruntled customer?

So while there was no smoking gun Shukan Taishu wonders if there could have been any truth to the rumors.

“Well the cops have been shutting down on Chinese-run massage parlors one after the next,” explains “pink” writer Yukio Murakami. “So the number of places where the girls can work has dropped off.

“The other thing is, it’s easy for such girls to find jobs at late-night restaurants, so it’s entirely possible some of them are working out deals with patrons.”

When it’s all said and done, though, Taishu’s story raises more new questions than it answers. (K.S.)
