As the “bubble economy” of the ’80s started to inflate, the nation’s sex industry rose to the occasion as well, so to speak, reports Shukan Asahi Geino (Nov. 24).

Dubbed the “fuzoku bubble,” the period largely began with the establishment of Monroe Walk in Kyoto in June 1980. It was the first no-pan kissa, or coffee shop in which women do not wear under garments. Other similar establishments opened in Osaka and Tokyo later that same year.

The shops featured topless waitresses in mini-skirts and stockings parading across a reflective flooring with fans to serve coffee for between 1,500 and 2,000 yen. A second boom occurred in 1984, when services were upped to include hand-jobs in private rooms for an additional 2,000 yen.

The nozoki heya made its debut in Osaka in 1981. The clubs offered a series of small private rooms with two-way mirrors that surrounded a large stage. For 2,000 yen, customers were able to view a highly sensual performance by a naked woman. Tissues were provided, and an additional 2,000-yen tip would allow for a private hand-job.

This service was considered the progenitor of conventional “fashion health” clubs, offering hand and mouth services, that predominate to this day.

“The mainstream brothels didn’t allow customers to select a particular woman,” says a fuzoku writer. “So this new system resulted in a huge boost in popularity.”

Indeed, nozoki joints were not offering coital sex, but things quickly escalated to include such offerings thereafter.

“While shops prohibited full service, they did allow it behind the scenes,” explains another fuzoku writer from that period. “It was dependent upon the particular shop. In fact, some girls quit because they were able to hear other customers moaning in erotic bliss in adjacent rooms.”

The “mistress bank” called Yugure-zoku (“evening wanderers”) was established in Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward in 1982. But in December of the next year, the establishment’s female manager was arrested on prostitution charges and operations ceased.

Until then, men paid 200,000 yen in membership fees to meet available women, who were charged up to 100,000 yen to register. At a meeting, the pair would agree upon terms of service.

The females, says another sex writer from the period, were not self-conscious about the arrangement. “Those who registered as mistresses didn’t share the notion that they were engaging in prostitution,” says the writer. (K.N.)

OSAKA (TR) – Osaka prefectural police arrested a former sergeant on Wednesday for receiving bribes from local organized crime members and leaking information, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Nov. 10).

According to investigators, ex-officer Shinpei Kuroki, 40, used a computer to reveal license plate numbers of undercover vehicles until May of this year to a 41-year-old Yamaguchi-gumi gang member formerly employed at real estate firm, located in Osaka’s Nishi Ward.

Further, between August 2006 and February of 2008, the suspect received bribes totaling three million yen on approximately 20 occasions. The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that Kuroki also was also selling unregistered mobile phones.

Working from an outside tip, police investigators uncovered evidence of the bribes late last year and launched an internal investigation in April. Kuroki was dismissed from the police force on October 27.

The Sankei Shimbun reports that the license plate numbers were used to alert fuzoku (sex-related) businesses of possible police activities.

The whereabouts of the former real estate employee are not known, but police are investigating, the Asahi reported.

Tokyo’s Yoshiwara district is known as the country’s largest soapland brothel area, offering a plethora of pleasures to please any punter, but exactly once every two months, reports weekly tabloid Shukan Post (Oct. 21), it’s filled with many grinning grandpas game to get it on.

Around the 15th day of even-numbered months, when pension checks are issued, the numerous bathhouses and bordellos that line the rectangular area’s streets become a playground for the Yoshiwara Nenkin-zoku, or the Yoshiwara Pension Tribe.

The magazine believes that this is one example of how the below-the-belt fuzoku industry is targeting the older generation and giving up on younger, more “passive” men, or soshokukei danshi.

“Soaplands that open early remind one of a hospital lobby since they are filled with many older men,” says Akira Ikoma, the editor of a guide to men’s entertainment called Ore no Tabi (My Trip). “That is the case with a place in Ikebukuro, where you can feel-up a gal’s chest. You’ll see many seniors smiling as they enjoy fumbling with their hands.”

Jun Hayakawa, a manager of an out-call aroma therapy service called Precious, located in Ikebukuro, says that his clientele is generally comprised of men in their 50s, but there is also one octogenarian in the bunch. “Many are pension recipients,” the manager explains. “Some are even attempting to sponsor our girls by offering some cash each month, but discourage that kind of thing.”

Aging doesn’t mean that a man will lose his sex drive, Shukan Post assures. Rather, it means that he has more time and maybe a bit of cash — so it’s natural to go have some fun.

Shun Sakai, the owner of the out-call (deri heru) service named Submissive Housewives Living around Tokyu Lines, asks that customers be above 30 years of age. “I myself used to go to fashion health shops in Shibuya but it was uncomfortable,” the manager explains. “Many guys in their 20s will give you cold looks, wondering why a mature person is here to play. It makes it difficult to visit.”

Sakai opened his club six years ago. Ladies are sent to residences or hotels, which allows customers to not meet one another face to face. His clientele breaks down as follows: those in their 30s (5 percent), between 40 and 59 (57 percent), and remainder is represented by those 60 and above, with the highest reaching 75.

The older the customer, the cheaper the rates. For the basic 90-minute course, fees range between 23,000 and 25,000 yen.

Most ladies are in their 30s, which is not standard in Tokyo. “While most men tend to favor 20-year-olds, that is too low for conversation purposes,” Sakai says. “Some also will be concerned that the girls will actually be looking down on them. So, for a temporary date, a mature woman fits better.”

The manager adds that when a lady is bit out of shape it relaxes a man. “We tend to select amateur-looking gals since the image of a professional is not appealing to senior men,” he says.

In fact, a girl was told by a client that her blow-job skills were sub-par. However, this imperfection subsequently made her more appealing.

“The ladies are urban and come with class,” says “Ｉｓａｏ Matsuda,” 64, a regular. “They are kind and full of warmth.”

When a lady arrives at a hotel, she’ll enjoy a chat with the customer for between 30 minutes and an hour. It is a must that he not ask private questions. They’ll then take a bath together.

“It has been five years since I’ve done it with my wife,” says Matsuda. “Since I am releasing my stress via these deri heru gals, I am getting better at becoming more sensitive to my spouse and female colleagues.”

He tells Shukan Post that just prior to the interview he had visited one such establishment.

OSAKA (TR) – The manager of a chain of sex shops staffed by married women in the Osaka area was cited this week for violating of the Income Tax Law, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Sept. 28).

On September 27, the Osaka Public Prosecutor’s Office indicted Kazuyuki Shimada for evading 46 million yen in taxes. The 42-year-old faces a penalty of 62 million yen.

Shimada presides over the nine “hotel health” branches, which dispense seemingly married women to customers waiting inside hotel rooms, at Oku Ichi, whose Umeda outlet offers services beginning at 9,900 yen for 70 minutes, and Love Oku, where 37-year-old Erika, who specializes in the utilization of lotions, is on call today in Nipponbashi starting at 5:00 p.m.

In 2008 and 2009, the clubs under Shimada had an income of 116 million yen.

SAPPORO (TR) – Following the request that the name Tokyo Electric Power Co. appear on a receipt for a sex club in Sapporo’s Susukino red-light district earlier this month, the establishment has decided to ban patronage from that firm, reports daily tabloid Yukan Fuji (Sept. 17).

On September 14, the fuzoku shop Olive Garden announced on its blog that it would not honor patrons hailing from TEPCO — in fact, it joked that the nuclear meltdown at Fukushima had sapped some of their virility in any case.

The reason for the ban goes back to an incident that occurred two days prior. “At around 10:30, a customer ordered the 70-minute course for 13,000 yen,” the shop manager tells the tabloid. “Upon exiting, he asked that no name be listed on the receipt. However, this shop doesn’t allow that kind of thing. After a second request for a name was made, he said, ‘TEPCO.’”

Receipts without a shop name are often arranged for customers wishing to make a claim for entertainment expenses and not reveal the nature of the services rendered to their company’s accounting department.

A professional accountant says that the legality of the matter is up to interpretation. “Strictly speaking, this is tax evasion and the company should be subject to additional taxes,” the source says. “If receipts from the same shop are submitted numerous times, the tax office will confirm with the shop if the charges are legitimate — but it is something of a gray zone.”

In spite of that — and that fact that office workers on business trips will frequently request that a name not appear — the manager of Olive Garden became angered as he scrawled the 東京電力 characters on the paper.

“It doesn’t matter if he was a real TEPCO employee or not,” says the manager. “In the future, it is best that TEPCO employees not indulge in sexual services and entertainment as a company expense. Until the nuclear power situation at Fukushima has been resolved completely, TEPCO employees don’t have the right to expense such things.

Yukan Fuji, of course, wonders if the customer was indeed a member of TEPCO. The daily says that it doesn’t make sense for TEPCO to have a presence in Sapporo at this time of year. The promotion desk at Hokkaido Electric Power indicated that it was not aware of any meetings between TEPCO and its firm.

TEPCO’s headquarters admitted that it was aware of the ban in Susukino, but could not offer any comment on that specific matter as details were not available.

“We deal with receipts in a strict manner,” explains a representative of TEPCO. “Therefore, such an occurrence is not possible.”

It would seem that the hammer has begun to fall upon fuzoku services that exist inside what is considered to be a legal grey zone. Take the arrests of August 22, suggests Shukan Jitsuwa (Sep. 15) — in which Kanagawa prefectural police took the managing directors of the Kawasaki Sweet and Kawasaki Emoda massage parlors into custody for violating the nationwide adult-entertainment law.

Each salon offers private rooms and a body-washing service, which has become common over the last two years, says a writer who covers the fuzoku, or commercial sex, trade.

“A girl in a swimsuit will wash each male customer’s body, but without rendering sexual services,” the source explains. “Since these shops can operate in areas that prohibit commercial sex operations, this business plan was quickly adopted nationwide.”

However, the girls at these parlors up the intimacy ante by pressing their breasts against the bodies of clients.

“In reality, the services offered at these shops are aggressive and overly done,” the previously quoted writer continues. “Intimate touching is considered a minimum. The girls will also grab a client’s private area while he is lying face-down.”

This crackdown by law enforcement, the hack says, is just the tip of the iceberg: “There are many shops that render even more extreme services.”

A female staff member, aged 24, from a parlor in Tokyo confesses that 90 percent of her clients blow their top. “Usually he’ll jerk himself off while I’m washing his body. I don’t know if this is considered illegal, but many guys do it as they cannot control themselves.”

Many of these shops do not have facial tissues, but that is not an issue as water can be used, the magazine assures.

Some girls take advantage of customers, waiting for them to become so wound up that they’ll offer cash for a helping hand, so to speak. The girl quoted earlier says, “I am sure many girls comply and simply request that management not be informed.”

That is not the only factor that is causing services to become more radical.

TOKYO (TR) – A bar hostess stabbed a host in Tokyo’s Kabukicho entertainment district following a dispute early yesterday morning, reports Zakzak (Sep. 2).

At around 3:35 a.m. on Sep. 1, a 25-year-old host — that is, a male club entertainer — was stabbed in the chest and back with a stationery knife by a hostess employed at a sex-related club, according to Tokyo Metropolitan Police.

The 27-year-old, a resident of Kawasaki City, was arrested for attempted murder. “I could see on his phone that he was communicating with other women, so I panicked, and then stabbed him,” she is quoted as saying by police.

The suspect was taken into custody after a separate woman called the hotel’s front desk and the police were alerted.

With the pennant races heating up, now is the time for NPB players to be at their best. Yet a feature in Shukan Taishu Venus (August 23) explains that the serious stick-playing begins after each game’s last out — albeit in a fashion that is more discreet than in days gone by.

In Tokyo, heavy hitters used to swing their bats in expensive soaplands in the Yoshiwara brothel district, and that is still true to some degree. “There’s a player with a bancho attitude that comes around,” says a beat writer with a sports paper. “He is a legend for using shops as his post-game shower room. He’ll play with three girls, no problem.”

However, a Yoshiwara street tout tells the tabloid, “We don’t see players come and play here as much as we used to.”

The manager took four of his girls in his van and delivered them to four players from a very popular Central League club. Among them was a crafty infielder, who made things challenging for the girl who serviced him. “I was bit scared because even my soft touch on his shoulder made him upset. He start shouting, saying I missed a spot. He knew so much about massage.”

Then after he finished up, he suddenly asked the gal for her number. When she said that her company’s policy prohibits such an activity, he smiled as if he’d flubbed a grounder.

Nagoya’s Sakae entertainment district is frequented by many visiting teams. “One popular one is a mattress health club that features large-chested gals,” says a local beat writer. “One hour runs 20,000 yen. The place gets good reviews and the tits are really high end.”

A regular is the best closer in the Central League and was a member of the World Baseball Classic roster. “I guess closers endure tremendous pressure,” says the same writer. “This guy seems to get some relief by being covered in lotion.”

But that’s not all.

“He broke his leg few years ago,” the writer continues. “This caused his slider to lose some bite, and fans got nervous watching his games. But the story you hear is that he actually slipped during mattress play, and that’s how he got hurt.”

Sakae is famous for its clubs featuring hitozuma gals — or married women. “I was called to go to a premier hotel in Sakae,” says one escort. “I knew two teams from the Central League use the hotel, but I couldn’t believe I would ever be called for one of them.” The guy waiting for her is a leadoff batter for a Tokyo-based team. The manager concurs about his lack of maturity. “He had no class,” he says. “He changed girls twice. One of them said he was really rough and handled her head during a blow-job.”

The magazine even tracked down one call girl who is actually a Hanshin Tigers fan. She remembers a left-handed pitcher from a Tokyo team who was in town.

“It was tough to give him massage as he was all muscle around the shoulder,” she remembers. Numerous news reports have documented the flight of foreign residents out of Tokyo following the Great East Japan Earthquake, and weekly tabloid Shukan Jitsuwa (July 7) takes an interest in the select group of Chinese females who fled to the Kansai area and now work at cut-rate massage parlors.

These illegally-operated establishments, which appear legit but offer hand-jobs, are mainly in Osaka’s Minami entertainment district.

“In the aftermath of the earthquake, only negative news reached mainland China,” says the operator of a Minami fuzoku joint. “A rumor going around said that 60 to 70% of Osaka-based Chinese took off. That left some shops with staff shortages, but there was also a sudden migration of girls from Tokyo.”

The magazine reports that there have been about 15 new shop openings within the Namba area and the border of Nihonbashi.

Prices are attractive. “Parlors with individual rooms require a minimal investment,” the same owner quoted earlier explains. “A simple curtain divides the rooms. Interior design costs are small, and staff members can be found to work for as low as 2,000 yen for an hour. So once a parlor can generate substantial revenue via intense customer rotation, they can minimize service fees.”

Therefore, a 2,980-yen charge for a massage and extra hand services for a half-hour is something Japanese-staffed parlors cannot match. One particular parlor offered body-washing as an added service and only charged 10,000 yen for 90 minutes.

And besides attractive personnel costs, advertising and recruitment outlays are kept in check. A sign posted in the street or an ad on the Internet will suffice. For recruitment, shops either utilize established relationships or place ads in Chinese newspapers, which charge about 15,000 yen. Japanese-staffed parlors will spend about a half-million yen a month for advertisements.

And the Japanese are taking note.

“It’s no longer true that Chinese shops are lagging behind in services,” says a fuzoku writer. “Girls who love Japan more than their country remained here and are working with great diligence. Their mannerisms and services easily exceed those of Japanese. While some Chinese parlors had some shady ways of charging customers, they are becoming accepted in Osaka.”

Nonetheless, these are illegally-operated parlors, warns the tabloid, and a crackdown by the police may by a real Shanghai surprise. (K.N.)

“It changed the way that men and women meet” — a bold statement indeed, and weekly tabloid Shukan Jitsuwa (June 9) is paying tribute to that game-changer, the terekura, which this year turns 25, or thereabouts.

For the uninitiated, and within SJ’s readership there are few meeting that criteria, a terekura (telephone club) operation includes a room or booth with a phone that men pay to enter and receive calls from women interested in going on dates if the terms are suitable.

“For enjoyment and making money, the fundamental rule is to let guys flirt with you,” explains 43-year-old Hanayo, who started at such clubs from the age of 17.

“The guy was around 40,” she remembers of her first encounter. “He was a good talker and made me give my virginity to him. He told me he knew how to do it without pain.”

Feeling that she had offered up something important, Hanayo decided to extract a bit of revenge through the clubs. “I was getting paid 30,000 yen just for a dinner date,” she says. “But there were times when I had to put out. Three steps forward and two steps back; three wins with two losses.” She wound up in the terekura world until she finished community college.

Fuzoku journalist Yukio Murakami, who has been following the practice since it began, says that at the start — roughly at tail end of the Showa Period (1926-1989) — money was not a prime motivating factor. “Money might have been used, but only as a thank you for getting someone to listen,” says the sex scribe. “Housewives would complain about being lonely or about their husbands. High school girls were also making calls purely out of interest. Before the laws were changed it was really simple to meet high school schools.”

For Hanayo, she joined an office after college and worked the company’s messaging system. It wasn’t long before her competent skills with a phone and the bursting of the bubble economy led her back to the clubs. But the number of men seeking sex at low rates had increased.

When she hit 30, she entered into an arranged marriage. Now she has two kids, and she resumed hunting for clients three years ago, when they had grown up. “These days I go to singles bars in Roppongi and museums to wait for guys to hit on me,” she says. “I start at 20,000 yen. Sometimes it goes up to 100,000 yen. You know, I still have the skills for targeting the right men.”

Saori, 37, says that girls of the Heisei Era (1989-Present) had the choice of the terekura or its sister endeavor, the burusera shop, which bought and sold used women’s under garments.

“Gals who didn’t want to provide full service went to burusera joints,” says Murakami. “Panties were sold for 5,000 yen each. If there were from a famous school, the price was 10,000 yen. Girls brought in their identification cards and took off their undies in front of customers. This sort of thing was mainstream then.”

Saori claims that her life changed after her first 5,000-yen sale. “Since then, I would wash a new pair once and wear it for two to three days straight,” she says. “I sold everything, including my swimsuit. Twice a year I submitted a form to my school stating that parts of uniform had been stolen. I think I made about one million yen just by selling socks.”

When she reached 20, use of the Internet increased. “It was around that time that these shops started getting cited,” Murakami says. “Shops were using online sites to show panties said to be authentic, and some girls were providing Polaroids of their private parts or pubic hair as promotion.”

Saori stayed in the panty-selling business even after she got married at the age of 25. Today she has three kids and has expanded into doing online chats. “While I cannot make money like I used to,” she says, “it is still better than typical part-time jobs. Regulars these days ask for shots of me inserting dildos.”

In 1994, a dating club (an enkokurabu) that utilized a Dial Q2 pay service for recruitment was busted. It was from this time that enjo kosai, or compensated dating, became a mainstream phrase, and Eiko, today 35, thought she could make some easy cash.

“A dinner date, some upskirt play, and then a hand-job at a karaoke box — that meant between 10,000 and 30,000 yen,” she remembers. “I quickly quit my 9-to-5 job and kept wearing a sailor-school uniform until I was 23.”

But Murakami adds that operations using Dial Q2 and party lines, which were derived from the terekura, were getting shut down over charging excessive fees. “Most of the online dating started going through online bulletin boards,” he says. “AOL, which required credit card payment and an ID check, was popular. All these girls looking for dates online were really amateurs. Then mobile phones came along, and now we have SNS. There has been a real transition in communication over the past 15 years.”

After retiring her school uniform, Eiko joined as many bulletin boards as possible. “That era was the best,” she gushes. “Posts reading ’30,000 yen for dinner only’ drew many quick responses. Perhaps the economy was good. The highest it reached was 160,000 yen.”

Eiko is actually an attractive lady, Shukan Jitsuwa assures, so her beauty helped. She then utilized SNS as soon as it was introduced since she sought a patron — more or less a sponsor. “Actually I met my husband in this way,” she says. “We were a good match.” He has a large income, but she still likes being wanted and continues to play via SNS. “It makes me wet when I know that I will be invited by a gentleman, bought by money, and done in a wild manner,” she says.

Then there is Kishiko, 41, who had sex for the first time when in middle school. Since then, she’s been hooked, and the terekura was a great option for her in the 1980s. “I wanted to do it once a day,” she says. “Even during a high school trip, I utilized a local terekura and did it with three guys. One time I met a janitor from my school. After that, he let me do it in his office.”

Murakami, however, argues that married women were more popular back in the terekura heyday. “After three years had passed, high school girls started to demand money,” he says. “But when the men paid, the sex wasn’t fun. It was much better to have sex with a wanting married women without money. There were more men who preferred that.” (A.T.)
