GIFU (TR) – Gifu Prefectural Police are seeking the help of the public in obtaining information related to a newborn whose body was found at a shrine in Gifu City one year ago, reports the Gifu Shimbun (Dec. 16).

On December 15, 2016, the body of the infant, with its umbilical cord attached, was found inside a backpack at the base of a tree on the left bank of a river at Kumano Shrine. Also included inside the backpack were a toiletry set and a photograph of an eraser.

When the baby was found its nose and mouth were blocked. The baby is believed to have died up to two days before the discovery, police said.

At the North Exit of JR Gifu Station on Friday, investigators handed out about 500 information sheets to commuters about the case, which is being treated as murder and abandoning a corpse.
