KYOTO (TR) – As a part of an investigation into the provision of a false medical diagnosis for a gang boss so that he could avoid imprisonment, Kyoto Prefectural Police have arrested a 61-year-old doctor at a hospital and two other persons, reports Nippon News Network (Mar. 28).
Chun Yeong-hwa, a doctor at Koseikai Takeda Hospital, located in Shimogyo Ward, has been accused of fabricating a diagnosis for Yoshiyuki Takayama, the head of the Oumi-ikka, a gang under the Yamaguchi-gumi.
In June of 2015, Takayama was sentenced to eight years in prison for extortion. The following February, Chun submitted a fabricated assessment of a heart problem suffered by Takayama to prosecutors to make his condition appear worse than reality so that he could avoid his prison sentence.
Hideshi Yamada, a 48-year-old member of the Yamaguchi-gumi, and Yoshihiko Onishi, 45, a former director of the hospital have been accused in facilitating the fabrication. According to NHK (Mar. 28), Chun was paid at least 1.5 million yen in cash and goods tickets by the gang for his participation in the alleged crime.
Toshikazu Yoshikawa, 60, chief of University Hospital Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, had previously admitted to submitting an exaggerated assessment of problems with Takayama’s kidneys.
In February of last year, prosecutors postponed Takayama’s sentence, a decision that was based on the submissions from both hospitals.
