TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a member of the Maritime Self-Defense Forces for allegedly breaking into a restaurant in a red-light district in Shinjuku Ward, reports TBS News (Mar. 28).

On February 12, Takuma Ito, a 25-year-old private at Shimofusa Air Base, located in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture, allegedly trespassed into the izakaya restaurant, located in Kabukicho, and stole 5,000 yen in cash contained in a wallet and a scarf. The items had been left behind by patrons and saved by the establishment.

Ito, who was drunk at the time, admits to the stealing the scarf. “Because it was cold,” he told police, “but I didn’t steal the cash.”

Prior to committing the crime, Ito had been drinking at the same izakaya. The suspect later moved on to another bar. However, he returned to the izakaya thereafter. At some point after entering, he spread his body out on some zabuton cushions and dropped his wallet, which contained an identification card that was later used by police in locating him.
