MIE (TR) – An elderly driver accidentally plunged his vehicle into a pit at a garbage processing plant in Ise City on Monday, reports TV Asahi (Mar. 27).

At around 10 a.m., the 66-year-old man, who was in the vehicle with his mother, 88, failed to reduce his speed when backing up on a platform and plummeted five meters into the pit. A worker had told him to stop prior to the plunge.

The driver and his mother were rescued by firefighters about an hour later and transported to a hospital with no life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Officials at the plant said a press conference that measures would be considered to prevent future occurrences.
