SAITAMA (TR) – Saitama Prefectural Police have arrested a 67-year-old man suspected in dozens of thefts of home appliances who was initially accused of shoplifting alcohol, reports TV Asahi (Mar. 27).

Police suspect Toyoji Higuchi has been behind the theft of around 50 new appliances, including computers and televisions, from big-name electronics stores this year. The items have a total value of around one million yen. He is believed to have resold the items to secondhand dealers in Tokyo.

On Thursday, police spotted Higuchi near JR Sugamo Station in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward and gave chase. At around 5:00 p.m. that same day, Saitama police apprehended him for allegedly shoplifting one bottle of sake from a supermarket in Kawaguchi City, Saitama.

“I was troubled with paying,” the suspect is quoted by police upon his arrest on suspicion of theft.
