TOKYO (TR) – An elderly male driver was arrested after he allegedly plowed into a bus stop in Setagaya Ward on Sunday morning, leaving four people injured, the Asahi Shimbun reports (Mar. 26).

Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested the 77-year-old driver for veering onto a sidewalk at around 9:40 a.m. before hitting and injuring the four victims waiting at the bus stop.

The driver, who has been charged with violating a law against dangerous driving resulting in death or injury, told police he was “dozing” at the time of the accident.

The injured include a 9-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy, a man in his 50s and a woman in her 60s. The girl suffered a serious head injury, Nippon News Network reported (Mar. 26).

The driver veered out of his lane into the bus stop on the other side of the road and struck the victims before smashing into a guardrail and a sign, police said.
