KAGOSHIMA (TR) – Experts are investigating why six sperm whales beached themselves near Minamisatsuma City on Friday, reports TBS News (Mar. 11).

Whales measuring about 10 meters in length were spotted surfacing frequently in shallow waters at around noon on Friday. Four of the whales have been confirmed dead while the two others are in weak condition, NHK reported (Mar. 10).

A humpback whale also beached itself two years ago. Similar cases have occurred in the past, but it is unusual for six whales to beach themselves at once, according to the Kagoshima Prefectural Government.
