HYOGO (TR) – Hyogo Prefectural Police have arrested a 66-year-old man after the discovery of skeletal remains likely belonging to his older brother inside the residence they share in Amagasaki City, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Feb. 24).

On the morning of February 23, a city employee in a welfare department contacted police after not being able to reach the older brother of Nobuo Tanaka for an extended period.

Later that day, officers entered the second-floor residence and found skeletal remains in the kitchen. The body did not have any external wounds.

Tanaka was subsequently arrested on charges of abandoning a corpse. “Last June, I found him collapsed and dead in the kitchen,” the suspect is quoted. “I just left him as is.”

In the fall of 2015, the city office had been unable to confirm the safety and well-being of the suspect’s brother. Last May, welfare payments for the brother were halted.

Police are now seeking to determine the cause of death, according to TV Asahi (Feb. 24).
